Começámos cedo de manhã. Havia vários voluntários externos este fim de semana: Cláudio, Pedro e, claro, Guilherme (o técnico), Lisett, Noah, Huberson e Emilie. A nossa tarefa era limpar o terreno, já que a área de plantação não tinha sido mantida. Por isso, tivemos de fazer alguma limpeza e criar um caminho. Já havia carvalhos, e outras espécies. Plantámos 58 árvores e arbustos, incluindo Quercus suber e Quercus robur.
O objetivo do dia era plantar onde não havia plantas e verificar se havia paus (marcadores) ao lado de cada planta já plantada anteriormente. Para isso, tivemos de fazer novas estacas. Fizemos manutenção do terreno, limpando e criando espaço para novas plantas. O tempo estava instável — pouco sol e alguma chuva. Trabalhámos todos juntos, lado a lado, como amigos.
We started early in the morning. There were several external volunteers this weekend: Cláudio, Pedro, and, of course, Guilherme (the technician), Lisett, Noah, Huberson, and Emilie. Our task was to clear the land, as the planting area had not been maintained. Therefore, we had to do some clearing work and create a path. There were already oaks and other species present. We planted 58 trees and shrubs, including Quercus suber and Quercus robur.
The goal of the day was to plant where there were no plants and to check whether there were stakes (markers) next to each plant that had been previously planted. For that, we had to make new stakes. We carried out site maintenance by clearing and creating space for new plants. The weather was unstable — little sun and some rain. We all worked together, side by side, as friends.
Com os mesmos voluntários do dia anterior, fizemos estacas e trabalhamos nas duas áreas para plantar todo o stock de árvores e arbustos. Choveu e não houve sol, mas o ambiente estava bom. Plantámos mais de 100 plantas (para ser mais preciso, 140) de 5 espécies diferentes: Alnus glutinosa, Quercus robur, Quercus suber, Arbutus unedo, Crataegus monogyna, Celtis australis e Fraxinus angustifolia.
Trabalhámos em duas áreas diferentes no Baldio de Carvalhais (chamadas área 1 e área 2).
With the same volunteers as the previous day, we made stakes and worked in both areas to plant the entire stock of trees and shrubs. It rained, and there was no sunshine, but the atmosphere was good. We planted more than 100 plants (to be precise, 140) from 5 different species: Alnus glutinosa, Quercus robur, Quercus suber, Arbutus unedo, Crataegus monogyna, Celtis australis, and Fraxinus angustifolia.
We worked in two different areas in Baldio de Carvalhais (called Area 1 and Area 2).
Com os mesmos voluntários e um novo participante chamado Frederico, plantámos algumas árvores ao longo da linha de água (a primeira), num total de 64 plantas: Arbutus unedo (39) e Fraxinus angustifolia (25). O técnico tinha expandido a área para podermos continuar a plantar mais acima. (Ver foto.) Também fizemos estacas para usar como marcadores para as plantas. Foi um dia bastante ensolarado. À tarde, fomos ver o carnaval.
Curiosidade do dia: O salgueiro é uma planta capaz de se regenerar. Basta cortar um ramo e replantá-lo noutro local, e ele crescerá, desde que esteja perto de um rio. Terá a mesma genética (clonagem) da que foi cortada.
With the same volunteers and a new participant named Frederico, we planted some trees along the waterline (the first one), totaling 64 plants: Arbutus unedo (39) and Fraxinus angustifolia (25). The technician had expanded the area so we could continue planting further uphill. (See photo.) We also made stakes to use as markers for the plants. It was a very sunny day. In the afternoon, we went to watch the carnival.
Fun fact of the day: The willow is a plant capable of regenerating itself. You simply cut a branch and replant it in another location, and it will grow, as long as it is near a river. It will have the same genetics (cloning) as the one that was cut.
Quarta e Quinta-feira / Wednesday and Thursday
Tivemos um fim de semana no meio da semana. Por isso, conseguimos descansar, terminar a semana com força e com muita energia. Fizemos várias atividades: a Lisett criou desenhos com lixívia em roupas, Huberson fez pão de centeio tradicional da Estónia, e Noah desenhou. Também demos um passeio pela aldeia. Jogámos um jogo chamado "Baccalauréat" — é um jogo de cultura geral.
We had a weekend in the middle of the week. This allowed us to rest and finish the week strong and full of energy. We did several activities: Lisett created bleach designs on clothing, Huberson made traditional Estonian rye bread, and Noah did some drawing. We also took a walk around the village. We played a game called “Baccalauréat” — it is a general knowledge game.
Sexta-feira / Friday
De manhã, fizemos estacas. Mais tarde encontrámos os sapadores florestais que estavam a limpar uma área nas proximidades.
Durante a tarde plantámos 79 árvores e arbustos. Como havia um ribeiro, o solo estava encharcado; por isso, tivemos de encontrar locais mais secos para plantar as espécies que preferem solo seco, priorizando aquelas que gostam de água para mais perto da linha de água. O sol brilhou e o tempo estava bastante agradável — parecia o início da primavera.
Curiosidade do dia: O fruto do medronheiro (o medronho) pode ser usado para fazer uma bebida alcoólica muito forte.
In the morning, we made stakes. Later, we met the forest workers who were clearing a nearby area.
During the afternoon, we planted 79 trees and shrubs. As there was a stream, the soil was waterlogged, so we had to find drier spots to plant the species that prefer dry soil, prioritising those that enjoy water closer to the waterline. The sun was shining, and the weather was quite pleasant — it felt like early spring.
Fun fact of the day: The fruit of the strawberry tree (medronho) can be used to make a very strong alcoholic drink.
Hoje, recebemos cinco novos voluntários: Mariana, João, Maria, Beatriz e Camila. Todos são estudantes da Universidade do Porto, a estudar psicologia, biologia e química. Estavam muito motivados e tudo correu muito bem. Trabalhamos numa área que precisava de ser limpa. Usámos serras, tesouras de poda e outras ferramentas para remover a vegetação que cobria a área onde iríamos plantar. Éramos 10 pessoas e trabalhamos de forma eficiente. Por isso, concentrámo-nos em limpar o terreno de manhã e plantámos à tarde.
Também verificámos as plantas mais antigas, que tinham sido plantadas anteriormente. Algumas, depois de alguns anos, tinham morrido, enquanto outras ainda estavam vivas. Substituímos as plantas mortas por plantas novas. O Afonso mostrou aos voluntários como plantar corretamente ao longo do dia, partilhando dicas e conselhos. Até avistámos alguma vida selvagem, incluindo uma salamandra e um gafanhoto. O tempo estava maravilhoso — sol durante todo o dia, com as temperaturas a subirem até aos 19°C. Foi o dia perfeito para plantar.
Curiosidade do dia: Conseguimos ver a montanha mais alta de Portugal coberta de neve: a Serra da Estrela.
Today, we welcomed five new volunteers: Mariana, João, Maria, Beatriz, and Camila. They are all students at the University of Porto, studying psychology, biology, and chemistry. They were very motivated and everything went very well. We worked in an area that needed clearing. We used saws, pruning shears, and other tools to remove the vegetation covering the area where we would plant. There were 10 of us, and we worked efficiently. Therefore, we focused on clearing the land in the morning and planted in the afternoon.
We also checked the older plants that had been planted previously. Some had died after a few years, while others were still alive. We replaced the dead plants with new ones. Afonso showed the volunteers how to plant correctly throughout the day, sharing tips and advice. We even spotted some wildlife, including a salamander and a grasshopper. The weather was wonderful — sunshine all day, with temperatures rising to 19°C. It was the perfect day for planting.
Fun fact of the day: We were able to see the highest mountain in Portugal covered in snow: Serra da Estrela.
