Os voluntários do projeto ENVIE, do parceiro Parcours le Monde, terminaram o seu voluntariado no dia 15 de abril e contam-nos o que fizeram nas suas últimas semanas de voluntariado.
The volunteers from the project ENVIE, from partner Parcours le Monde, finished their volunteering on April 15th and they tell us what they did during their last few weeks of volunteering.

“Na segunda-feira, 25 de março, fomos ao viveiro onde limpámos alguns tabuleiros para podermos colocar novas plantas. Para isso, usámos plantas que foram produzidas pela MONTIS e terra que a Lúcia tinha comprado. Enchemos os tabuleiros com terra, compactámos a terra, depois retirámos as plantas com as suas raízes com colheres e colocámo-las nos tabuleiros. Depois de terminarmos esta nova atividade, regámos todas as plantas MONTIS antes de irmos para casa para a pausa do almoço. A tarde foi dedicada a escrever o resumo da semana anterior.
“On Monday, March 25th, we went to the plant nursery where we cleaned some trays so we could put new plants there. For this, we took plants that were grown by MONTIS and potting soil that Lúcia had purchased. We filled the trays with potting soil, tamped it down, then we scooped out the plants with their roots using spoons, and placed them in the trays. After finishing this new activity, we watered all the MONTIS plants before heading home for lunch break. The afternoon was dedicated to writing the recap of the previous week.”
“Na terça-feira, 26 de março, passámos a manhã a afiar as ferramentas que trouxemos da garagem. Entre elas, navalhas de acácia, tesouras de poda e tesouras grandes. Durante a tarde, enquanto o Antoine escrevia um resumo do que a Teresa (a Presidente da MONTIS) lhe ensinou sobre os Carvalhais de Vermilhas no sábado passado, o Léo e o Valentin verificavam o estado de várias câmaras utilizadas para monitorizar a biodiversidade, instalando-as na natureza. Em particular, tiveram de verificar se as câmaras tinham uma bateria e um cartão de memória. Quando o Antoine terminou o seu resumo, juntou-se a eles e fez um vídeo explicativo sobre a atividade.”
“On Tuesday, March 26th, we spent the morning sharpening tools that we brought from the garage. Among them were acacia knives, pruning shears and large scissors. During the afternoon, while Antoine wrote a summary of what Teresa (the President of MONTIS) taught him about Carvalhais de Vermilhas last Saturday, Léo and Valentin checked the status of several cameras used to monitor the biodiversity by installing them in the nature. They specifically had to check if the cameras had a battery and a memory card. When Antoine had finished his summary, he joined them and made an explanatory video on the activity.”
“Na quarta-feira, dia 27 de março, fomos com a Lúcia fazer uma grande limpeza na casa do Deilão, porque dois novos estagiários irão viver lá em breve. Os armários, o forno, o frigorífico, a casa de banho, as janelas e os quartos, limpámos tudo e deixámos o local o mais limpo possível. No final do dia, o Antoine fez um novo vídeo com a ajuda do Léo onde apresentaram a casa. Também trouxemos connosco vários cobertores que teríamos de lavar... Eram tantos que quase não tínhamos espaço para nos sentarmos no carro!”
“On Wednesday, March 27th, we went with Lúcia to do a big cleaning at Deilão's house, because 2 new trainees will be coming to live there soon. The cupboards, the oven, the fridge, the bathroom, the windows and the bedrooms, we cleaned everything and made the place as clean as possible. At the end of the day, Antoine made a new video with Léo's help where they presented the house. We also brought with us several blankets that we would have to wash... There were so many that we almost had no room to sit in the car!”
“Na quinta-feira, 28 de março, que marcou o fim da semana, passámos a manhã na lavandaria para lavar os cobertores e, ao mesmo tempo, escrevemos o resumo da semana. No final da manhã, o Valentin foi à Quinta das Lamas para tentar descascar algumas acácias, mas o tempo não estava a colaborar. À tarde, o Valentin encarregou-se de acabar de secar as mantas. Entretanto, o Léo e o Antoine ficaram em casa a escrever um guia sobre as especificidades das acácias, explicando o que as torna resistentes, como se reproduzem, como as controlar e outras informações, acompanhadas de fotografias e de um diagrama. Este guia será útil mais tarde para outros voluntários que nos vão substituir, por isso é importante fazer um trabalho limpo.”
“On Thursday, March 28th, which marked the end of the week, we spent the morning at the laundromat to wash the blankets, and we wrote the week's recap at the same time. Late in the morning, Valentin went to Quinta das Lamas to try to debark some acacia trees, but the weather wasn't really cooperative. In the afternoon, Valentin took charge of finishing drying the blankets. Meanwhile, Léo and Antoine stayed at home to write a guide on the specifics of acacias, explaining what makes them resistant, how they reproduce, how to control them and other information, accompanied by photos and a diagram. This guide will be useful later for other volunteers who will take over from us, so it is important to do a clean job.”
“Durante esta semana, a Lomane fez o guia dos voluntários da propriedade Carvalhal de Vermilhas para ajudar os futuros voluntários a compreender e conhecer melhor esta propriedade da MONTIS. No guia do Baldio de Carvalhais, ela anotou as diferentes informações desta propriedade, como a localização, tamanho, planos, explicações, bem como a lista de plantas e espécies de animais presentes no local.”
“During this week, Lomane made the guide of the volunteers of the property Carvalhal de Vermilhas to help the future volunteers to understand and better know this propriety of MONTIS. On the guide of Baldio de Carvalhais, she noted the different information of this property such as the location, size, plans, explanations, as well as the list of local plants and animal species.”

“Terça-feira, 2 de abril, separámos os cobertores, as capas de edredão, os lençóis que estavam na garagem para preparar o acolhimento dos novos estagiários que em breve chegarão à casa onde trabalhámos na semana anterior, lavámos os lençóis que estavam na lavandaria e depois trouxemo-los de volta para MONTIS.”
“Tuesday, April 2nd, we sorted the blankets, duvet covers, sheets that were in the garage to prepare the welcome of new trainees who will soon arrive in the house we worked the week before, we have thereafter, washed the sheets held in the laundry then we brought them back to MONTIS.”
“Quarta-feira, dia 3 de abril, com os outros voluntários, plantámos no Baldio de Carvalhais com a Inês. Foi o nosso último dia de plantação do nosso voluntariado e tivemos direito a um belo sol para nos ajudar. Plantámos 200 árvores e o terreno era bastante fácil de cavar, o que facilitou o nosso trabalho. Uma vez terminadas as plantações, tivemos a oportunidade de nos refrescarmos na água do rio que corre ao longo dos montes.”
“Wednesday, April 3rd, with the other volunteers, we planted in Baldio de Carvalhais with Inês. It was our last planting day of our volunteering, had the right to a beautiful sun to help us. We planted 200 trees. The land was quite easy to dig, which facilitated our work. Once the plantations finished, we had the chance to cool off in the water of the river that flows along the hills.”
“Quinta-feira, 4 de abril, fomos às Quintas das Lamas, cortar acácias no nosso local habitual, fomos acompanhados pelo Yuri, que é o novo estagiário espanhol que vai assumir o nosso trabalho quando regressarmos à França. Mostrámos-lhe como proceder para as acácias e mais uma vez o sol estava connosco!”. (Os voluntários assumiram erradamente este conceito, efetivamente o Yuri esteve no campo com eles, para conhecer o trabalho que estava a ser desenvolvido pela MONTIS, contudo as funções de um estagiário são distintas das funções dos voluntários.)
“Thursday, April 4th, we were going to Quintas das Lamas, cutting acacias in our usual spot, we were accompanied by Yuri, who is the new Spanish trainee who will take over our work when we have returned to France. We showed how to proceed for acacias, again the sun was with us!”. (The volunteers mistakenly assumed that concept. Yuri was in the field with them to learn about the work being carried out by MONTIS, but the duties of an intern are different from those of volunteers.)
“Sexta-feira, dia 5 de abril, continuámos a ir às Quinta das Lamas com o Yuri, desta vez intersetámos (queriam dizer: retificámos) o descasque de acácias que estavam mal descascadas, pois a acácia é uma árvore que se regenera fácil e rapidamente, se a casca tiver mal ou não estiver totalmente no tronco ou se houver filamentos à volta do tronco. A Lúcia acompanhou-nos a verificar as acácias feitas desde o início do nosso voluntariado. Posteriormente subimos a propriedade (gerida pela) MONTIS, a Quintas das Lamas, (incluindo) onde a casa está localizada com belos jardins (para monitorizar a evolução do controlo de invasoras nas áreas controladas anteriormente).”
“Friday, April 5th, we continued to go to Quintas das Lamas with Yuri, this time if we intersected the acacias that were badly finished (they mean: this time we rectified the peeling of acacia trees that were poorly finished), because acacia is a tree that regenerates easily and quickly if the bark has bad or not entirely the trunk (they mean: entirely removed from the trunk) or if there are filature around the trunk. Lúcia accompanied us to check the acacia made since the beginning of our volunteering. We have subsequently climbed the property (managed by) MONTIS, Quintas das Lamas, (including) where the house is located with beautiful gardens (to monitor the progress of invasive weed control in previously controlled areas).”

Aqui fica o breve registo das atividades desenvolvidas na última semana. Na segunda-feira, 8 de abril, continuamos a tarefa de organizar e lavar a roupa de cama que ainda estava na garagem e fizemos o resumo da semana anterior. Na terça-feira, 9 de abril, ajudamos a preparar a comida para conferência “A primeira década da MONTIS - um olhar para o futuro” e durante a tarde continuamos a descascar acácias na Quinta das Lamas. Na quarta-feira, 10 de abril, arrumamos alguns itens no escritório, para garantir que este estaria organizado e arrumado. Na quinta-feira, 11 de abril, regressamos, pela última vez, à Quinta das Lamas para retificar o descasque das acácias. Na sexta-feira, 12 de abril, ajudamos a preparar os materiais que iriam ser necessários durante o voluntariado mensal em Costa Bacelo e durante a tarde estivemos a refletir sobre a nossas experiência de voluntariado na MONTIS, e demos as nossas recomendações por forma a podermos melhorar a experiência de futuros voluntários. Por fim, no sábado, 13 de abril, realizou-se o voluntariado mensal, onde pudemos conhecer o trabalho que a Maria, estagiária da MONTIS, estava a desenvolver com recurso à recolha de indícios de presença da biodiversidade (pegadas e excrementos) e à foto-armadilhagem. Para terminar o dia controlamos também háquea-picante com uma vista privilegiada para o vale do rio Paiva.
Here is a brief record of last week’s activities. On Monday, 8th April, we continued the task of organising and washing the bed linen that was still in the garage and did a recap of the previous week. On Tuesday, 9th April, we helped prepare the food for the conference “MONTIS’ first decade - a look to the future” and in the afternoon we continued peeling acacia trees at Quinta das Lamas. On Wednesday, 10th April, we tidied up a few items in the office to make sure it was organised and tidy. On Thursday, 11th April, we returned to Quinta das Lamas for the last time to rectify the acacia tree peeling. On Friday, 12th April, we helped prepare the materials that would be needed during the monthly volunteering at Costa Bacelo and during the afternoon we reflected on our experience of volunteering at MONTIS and we gave our recommendations so that we could improve the experience for future volunteers. Finally, on Saturday, 13th April, we took part in the monthly volunteering, where we were able to learn about the work that Maria, a MONTIS trainee, was doing by collecting signs of biodiversity (footprints and droppings) and photo-trapping. To round off the day, we also control the silky hakea, with a privileged view of the Paiva river valley.
