Novo estagiário da MONTIS: Cedric

Recebemos no dia 25 de setembro de 2024, um novo estagiário, o Cedric Hofmeister. Vejam a apresentação dele abaixo! (tradução em PT no final)

"Hello there, 

My name is Cedric, I’m 25 years old and I’ll be doing an internship with MONTIS for the next couple months. 

In January, I completed my bachelor's degree in landscape planning and nature conservation at HfWU in southern Germany. I enjoy working with my hands, so I really like the practical part of conservation. I’m also interested in data collection and georeferencing, as I enjoy working with GIS and creating maps. 

In recent years, I have been abroad a lot and was lucky enough to connect with locals, live with traditional local families and live-in communities or regenerative projects. Through that, I have been able to gain experience in development work, permaculture, sustainable land use and small-scale conservation projects.  In the future, I’m planning to work in NGO’s that combine nature conservation with development work and operate in disadvantaged regions. 

On my first day, João took me to some of the MONTIS properties and other areas around it. It was a first understanding of the ecosystem and its current problems. It was interesting to see the difference of areas where conservation work was done and areas where little to no work was done yet. To see and to understand the management work that has been done there was very helpful. After the last burnings the natural oak forest got affected a lot and a lot of the older trees died. Now those areas are characterized by regenerating oaks, which are just starting to grow over the shrub layer, and a lot of overgrown brooms. What was surprising for me is how abandoned the areas actually are, almost nowhere you see remains of anthropological use. 

I have the feeling I will have the possibility to do a lot of different things here depending on my personal interests. I really like the philosophy and vision MONTIS works with and I am thankful for the opportunity to gain experience working in a non-profit NGO. What I particularly look forward to is to do planting for reforestation, installing and viewing camera traps, debarking big trees and controlling invasive species. 

I hope to be of positive impact for MONTIS and maybe even continue to work here after the internship."

Olá, 

O meu nome é Cedric, tenho 25 anos e vou fazer um estágio na MONTIS durante os próximos meses. 

Em janeiro, concluí a minha licenciatura em planeamento paisagístico e conservação da natureza na HfWU, no sul da Alemanha. Gosto de trabalhar com as mãos, por isso gosto muito da parte prática da conservação. Também me interesso pela recolha de dados e georreferenciação, pois gosto de trabalhar com SIG e criar mapas. 

Nos últimos anos, tenho estado muito tempo no estrangeiro e tive a sorte de me relacionar com os habitantes locais, viver com famílias tradicionais locais e viver em comunidades ou projetos regenerativos. Assim, pude ganhar experiência em trabalho de desenvolvimento, permacultura, utilização sustentável dos solos e projetos de conservação em pequena escala. No futuro, tenciono trabalhar em ONGs que combinem a conservação da natureza com o trabalho de desenvolvimento e que operem em regiões desfavorecidas. 

No meu primeiro dia, o João levou-me a algumas das propriedades da MONTIS e a outras áreas circundantes. Foi uma primeira compreensão do ecossistema e dos seus problemas atuais. Foi interessante ver a diferença entre áreas onde o trabalho de conservação foi feito e áreas onde pouco ou nenhum trabalho foi feito. Ver e compreender o trabalho de gestão que tem vindo a ser feito foi muito útil. Após os últimos incêndios, o carvalhal natural foi muito afetado e muitas das árvores mais velhas morreram. Agora, essas áreas são caracterizadas por carvalhos em regeneração, que estão a começar a crescer sobre o estrato arbustivo, e muitas giestas crescidas. O que me surpreendeu foi o abandono em que se encontram as áreas, quase não se veem vestígios de utilização antropológica. 

Tenho a sensação de que vou ter a possibilidade de fazer muitas coisas diferentes aqui, dependendo dos meus interesses pessoais. Gosto muito da filosofia e da visão com que a MONTIS trabalha e estou grato pela oportunidade de ganhar experiência a trabalhar numa ONG sem fins lucrativos. O que mais me motiva é fazer plantações para reflorestação, instalar e câmaras de fotoarmadilhagem, e fazer o controlo de espécies invasoras.

Espero ter um impacto positivo na MONTIS e talvez até continuar a trabalhar aqui depois do estágio.
