GiestaHappyBees: o relatório da semana de 17/02 a 21/02

Os voluntários de longa duração da MONTIS, Hugo e Gabriel (conhecidos como "GiestaHappyBees"), deixam-nos o seu testemunho da semana de 17 a 21 de fevereiro. Eles também fizeram a tradução para português dos seus textos, uma vez que estão a fazer um esforço para aprender o idioma. Nota: nesta semana foram também acompanhados pelo Cedric, o estagiário alemão que além do trabalho no terreno tem também apoiado a MONTIS em SIG e uso do drone.

MONTIS long-term volunteers, Hugo and Gabriel (known as “GiestaHappyBees”), give us their report of the week of February 17-21. They have also translated their texts into Portuguese, as they are making an effort to learn the language. Note: this week they were also joined by Cedric, the German intern that besides the work in field is also supporting MONTIS in GIS and the drone.

Observações / Remarks :

Nas tardes de segunda e terça-feira, visitámos duas outras propriedades da MONTIS: Cerdeirinha e Carvalhal de Vermilhas.

Na Cerdeirinha, parte da propriedade é composta por socalcos e muitos carvalhos (tanto Quercus suber como Quercus robur), que até então não tínhamos encontrado com tanta frequência. Com o Henrique, tivemos a oportunidade de aprender mais sobre a gestão do Quercus robur, o papel do Estado e dos municípios na gestão de áreas naturais, a predominância da propriedade privada em Portugal, como o eucalipto se tornou tão dominante e como MONTIS tenta lidar com isso tudo. Também usamos o drone para ter uma visão geral da propriedade.

Em Carvalhal de Vermilhas, conhecemos uma propriedade que ardeu no passado, e como poucos carvalhos de grande porte sobreviveram ao fogo. Na parte inferior da propriedade, encontra-se uma bela cascata. Observámos também o trabalho das equipas de limpeza, que removeram giestas em algumas zonas da propriedade.

On Monday and Tuesday’s afternoons, we visited two other Montis’ properties : Cerdeirinha and Carvalhal de Vermilhas.

In Cerdeirinha, part of the property was made of terraces and had lots of oaks (both Quercus suber and robur), that we’ve not encountered that much until there. With Henrique, we had the occasion to learn about the management of Quercus robur, the role of the state and the municipalities in the management of natural lands, the way private property is predominant in Portugal, how did the eucalyptus became so dominant and how Montis tries to deal with all that. We also flew the drone to have an overview of the property.

In Carvalhal de Vermilhas, we’ve discovered a property that burned and where few big oaks survived the fire. A beautiful waterfall is at the bottom of the property. We’ve also seen the work of professionals of cleaning, who have cleaned giestas on some areas of the property.

No Baldio de Carvalhais, continuámos a plantar (ver quadro acima). Como as áreas disponíveis são muito reduzidas se apenas plantarmos onde não há pedras, decidimos tentar remover pedras de maior dimensão para criar novas zonas de plantação. Isto é muito exigente do ponto de vista físico, mas até agora a estratégia está a funcionar bem e permite uma densidade de plantação muito maior, o que é ótimo!

Também utilizámos o drone para sobrevoar a área e tirámos algumas fotografias. Isto é ótimo para perceber o trabalho feito e planeamos fazê-lo novamente na próxima semana.

Por fim, fizemos uma viagem a Vouzela na sexta-feira à tarde, uma vez que estava a chover muito, para adquirir mais algumas ferramentas para os próximos dias. Na terça-feira, um novo voluntário juntar-se-á à equipa, e os nossos amigos Baptiste e Hugo também se vão juntar a nós no início de março.

In Baldio de Carvalhais, we’ve continued plantings (see table above). Since the spots are too few if we only plant where there are no rocks, we are now trying to remove big rocks to create new planting spots. This is very physically demanding but so far the strategy is working well and allows a much bigger density of planting, which is great !

We also flew the drone once in the area and took a few pictures. This is great to realize the work done, and we plan to do it again next week.

Finally, we’ve made a trip to Vouzela on Friday afternoon since it was heavily raining, in order to get some more tools for the days to come. Another volunteer is joining the house on Tuesday, and our 2 friends Baptiste and Hugo are joining us too in the beginning of March.
