Na sexta-feira, visitamos a propriedade Baldio de Carvalhais pela primeira vez. Lá, usamos foices e enxadas para limpar a área de fetos e vegetação rasteira. No entanto, tivemos de ter cuidado para não danificar as árvores jovens que tinham sido plantadas nos meses anteriores. O principal desafio era cortar a vegetação ao redor de pedras e árvores existentes, evitando, ao mesmo tempo, buracos inesperados no solo. O tempo estava maravilhoso, com muito sol e poucas nuvens, mas rapidamente começámos a suar enquanto trabalhávamos. Ao final do dia, conseguimos abrir um caminho e limpar várias áreas ao redor das árvores.
On Friday, we visited the property Baldio de Carvalhais for the first time. There, we used scythes and shovels to clear the area of ferns and undergrowth. However, we had to be careful not to damage the young trees that had been planted in the previous months. The main challenge was mowing around stones and existing trees while avoiding unexpected holes in the ground. The weather was wonderful, with plenty of sunshine and only a few clouds, but we quickly started to sweat while working. By the end of the day, we had managed to clear a path and several areas around the trees.
Terça-feira / Tuesday
Como preparação para o dia seguinte, a nossa tarefa era limpar um caminho de fetos e espinhos. Conduzimos até ao início do caminho e fomos buscar as nossas ferramentas. O início foi a parte mais difícil, com muitos espinhos e arbustos difíceis de remover. Mas, depois dos primeiros 25 metros, tornou-se mais fácil. Já não havia espinhos, apenas fetos. Além disso, passámos a conseguir trabalhar à sombra das árvores. Durante o nosso almoço começou a chover, mas quando terminámos, a chuva parou. A última parte voltou a dar muito trabalho, não pelas plantas, mas pela inclinação e pelas pedras soltas no solo. Mas conseguimos! A nossa última tarefa foi levar as plantas que é suposto plantarmos amanhã, com as pessoas externas, para a propriedade onde vamos trabalhar no dia seguinte.
As a preparation for the next day, our task was to clear a path from ferns and thorns. We drove to the start of the path and got our tools. The beginning was the hardest part, with many thorns and bushes that were hard to remove. But after the first 25 meters, it got easier. No more thorns, only ferns. Also, we were then able to work in the shadow of the trees. During our lunch, it started raining, but when we finished, it stopped. The last part was hard work again, not because of the plants, but because of the slope and loose rocks on the ground. But we made it! Our final task was to bring the plants we are supposed to plant tomorrow with the external people to the property where we will be working the next day.
Quarta-feira / Wednesday
Na quarta-feira, fomos de carro até ao Bioparque, onde nos encontrámos com o grupo do Novobanco. Juntos, caminhámos pelo caminho que tínhamos limpado no dia anterior e plantámos diferentes tipos de árvores, marcando cada uma com um ramo. Durante o trabalho, tivemos conversas interessantes com alguns dos funcionários do banco. Depois, ajudámos a preparar uma refeição, experimentámos diferentes pratos da gastronomia portuguesa, arrumámos tudo em conjunto e terminámos o dia.
On Wednesday, we drove to Bioparque, where we met the group from Novobanco. Together, we hiked along the path we had cleared the previous day and planted different types of trees, marking each one with a stick. During the work, we had interesting conversations with some of the bank employees. Afterwards, we helped prepare a meal, tried different Portuguese foods, cleaned up together, and ended the day.
Na quinta-feira, regressámos ao mesmo local do dia anterior para concluir o trabalho em curso. Dividimo-nos em equipas: um grupo foi buscar água para regar as árvores recém-plantadas, enquanto o outro grupo se concentrou em plantar as árvores que faltavam do dia anterior e em marcá-las com paus de madeira. Com as nossas enxadas, cavámos buracos, plantámos cuidadosamente as árvores e compactámos a terra à sua volta. Depois, colocámos um ramo ao lado de cada planta para que pudessem ser facilmente localizadas mais tarde. Assim que o primeiro grupo regressou com os bidões cheios de água, alguns de nós começaram a regar, enquanto os outros terminavam de plantar as últimas árvores. Para garantir que as árvores jovens tivessem espaço suficiente, alargámos o nosso trabalho a um segundo local dentro da mesma área. Depois do almoço, toda a equipa trabalhou em conjunto para regar todas as novas plantas. Esta tarefa revelou-se bastante desafiante devido aos pesados garrafões de água, à encosta íngreme e ao terreno irregular, mas conseguimos realizar a tarefa com sucesso.
On Thursday, we returned to the same site as the previous day to finish our ongoing work. We split into teams: one group went to fetch water to water the newly planted trees, while the other group focused on planting the remaining trees from the day before and marking them with wooden sticks. Using our spades, we dug holes, carefully planted the trees, and packed the soil around them. Afterward, we placed a stick next to each one so they can be easily located later. Once the first group returned with full water barrels, some of us began watering while the others finished planting the last few trees. To ensure the young trees had enough space, we expanded our work to a second spot within the same area. After lunch, the entire team worked together to water all the new plants. This turned out to be quite challenging due to the heavy water bottles, the steep slope, and the uneven terrain, but we managed it successfully.
Na sexta-feira, o grupo foi dividido em duas equipas. O Arvin e a Marie-Lou foram para a área onde tínhamos plantado novas árvores na quinta-feira. A tarefa deles foi regar as árvores novamente. A Flora, a Leticia e a Veronica tiveram uma tarefa diferente. Tivemos de libertar as árvores recém-plantadas das silvas que cresciam à sua volta. Devido ao calor, terminámos o trabalho mais cedo do que o habitual. À tarde, recolhemos bolotas na vizinhança até enchermos um saco inteiro.
On Friday, the group was split into two teams. Arvin and Marie-Lou went to the area where we had planted new trees on Thursday. Their task was to water the trees again. Flora, Leticia and Veronica had a different task. We had to free the newly planted trees from the surrounding blackberry bushes. Due to the heat, we finished work earlier than usual. In the afternoon, we collected acorns in the neighbourhood until we had filled an entire sack.
Sábado / Saturday
No sábado, trabalhámos numa nova tarefa. Para preparar uma parcela para uma queima controlada, tivemos de abrir caminhos através dos fetos e dos arbustos espinhosos utilizando ferramentas manuais. No final do dia, conseguimos limpar um caminho inteiro.
On Saturday, we worked on a new task. To prepare the forest for prescribed burns, we had to clear paths through the ferns and thorny bushes using hand tools. In the end, we managed to clear an entire path.
