Os voluntários de longa duração da MONTIS, Hugo e Gabriel (conhecidos como "GiestaHappyBees"), deixam-nos o seu testemunho da semana de 10 a 14 de fevereiro. Eles também fizeram a tradução para português dos seus textos, uma vez que estão a fazer um esforço para aprender o idioma. Nota: nesta semana foram também acompanhados pelo Cedric, o estagiário alemão que além do trabalho no terreno tem também apoiado a MONTIS em SIG e uso do drone.
MONTIS long-term volunteers, Hugo and Gabriel (known as “GiestaHappyBees”), give us their report of the week of February 10-14. They have also translated their texts into Portuguese, as they are making an effort to learn the language. Note: this week they were also joined by Cedric, the German intern that besides the work in field is also supporting MONTIS in GIS and the drone.

Observaçoes/ Remarks:
No cimo da zona, a vegetação é muito densa, com predominância de silvas até 1,8 m, pelo que fomos mais lentos na terça e quarta-feira, mas esse trabalho era necessário. Sentimos que melhorámos com o trabalho de limpeza, pois conhecemos mais técnicas, quais as ferramentas a utilizar, quando, etc.. E ótimo!
Quando começámos a limpar superfícies e não só caminhos, apercebemo-nos de que a área é muito rochosa. Por vezes, tivemos que cavar seis buracos antes de encontrar um bom sítio, e a densidade de locais onde podemos "tentar" cavar um buraco não é muito grande, porque as grandes rochas sem terra representam uma boa parte da área. Em conjunto, a densidade de árvores plantadas dificilmente será tão elevada como esperado, bem como o ritmo de plantação. Como foram apenas os nossos primeiros dias de plantação, ainda estamos certamente a melhorar e a descobrir a técnica, mas as estatísticas não serão muito mais do que a média de cinco plantas/voluntário/dia que fizemos esta semana.
Pensamos que uma bom forma de trabalhar a partir de agora será utilizar as manhãs como sessões de limpeza (4 horas), e depois de almoço como sessões de plantação (2 horas). Isto é necessário porque, devido ao terreno da zona, temos de limpar grandas zonas para podermos encontrar bom locais. Desta forma, poderemos manter um ritmo diário de plantações.
Comecamos a conhecer a superficie e os limites da area, a partir dos caminhos que fizemos, e percebemos que a orientação da zona não está alinhada com a inclinação do terreno. Pensamos que seria uma boa opportunidade para utilizar o drone da MONTIS para conhecer melhor a zona na sua totalidade, bem como ter uma visão geral de como nos saímos durante esta primeira semana.
Criámos contas iNaturalist e aderimos ao projeto MONTIS! É muito divertido e instrutivo, estamos ansiosos por dar os nossos contributos :) !
At the top of the area, the vegetation became very dense, with mainly brambles going up to 1.8 meters, so we were slower on Tuesday and Wednesday, but this work was necessary. We are feeling that we are getting more and more comfortable with the cleaning work, as we know more techniques, which tools to use when etc ! It feels great !!
When we started to clean areas and not only do paths (Wednesday and after), we realized that the area is very rocky. Sometimes, we had to dig up to 6 holes before finding a good spot, and the density of spots where we can “try” to dig a hole isn’t that big, because big rocks with no soil on them represent a good portion of the area. This combined, the density of trees planted will hardly be as high as expected, as well as the pace of planting (34/volunteer/day). Since it was only our first days of planting, we are for sure still improving and discovering the technique, but the stats won’t be that much more than the average of 5 plants/volunteers/day we did this week.
We thought that a good way of working from now would be to use the mornings as the cleaning sessions (approximately 4 hours), and the afternoons as the planting sessions (approximately 2 hours). This is necessary since, because of the terrain in the area, we need to clean a big area to be able to find good spots for planting. This way, we are able to keep a daily pace of planting
We are beginning to know the surface and the limits of the area, from the paths we made, and we realized that the orientation of the area (as a kind of rectangle), is not aligned with the slope of the terrain : when you go straight up in real life, you go in a kind of diagonal in the rectangle. We thought it would be a great opportunity to use Montis’ drone to get to know the area better in its entirety, as well as have an overview of how we did for this first week !
We created iNaturalist accounts and joined the Montis project ! It’s really fun and instructive, we are looking forward to adding our contributions :) !
