Os voluntários de longa duração da MONTIS, Hugo e Gabriel (daqui em diante conhecidos como "GiestaHappyBees"), deixam-nos o seu testemunho dos seus primeiros dias com a MONTIS, a 7 e 8 de fevereiro. Eles também fizeram a tradução em português dos seus textos, uma vez que estão a fazer um esforço para aprender o idioma.
MONTIS long-term volunteers, Hugo and Gabriel (henceforth known as “GiestaHappyBees”), tell us about their first days with MONTIS on February 7th and 8th. They have also translated their texts into Portuguese, as they are making an effort to learn the language.
Em primeiro lugar queremos agradecer sinceramente por nos terem dado a oportunidade de fazer parte da MONTIS.
A nossa aventura com a MONTIS começou no dia 7 de fevereiro quando descobrimos o baldio de Carvalhais e as zonas onde teremos de trabalhar.
Primeiro fomos até ao local principal onde vamos trabalhar, que podem ver a verde vivo no mapa seguinte. Nesta área ocorreu um fogo controlado há dois anos e agora é tempo de plantar, que é a principal tarefa que iremos realizar na área. O acesso à área foi aberto apenas parcialmente, pelo que a nossa primeira tarefa será criar um acesso seguro. A linha amarela é o caminho entre a nossa casa e a zona por onde vamos caminhar todos os dias. A linha branca é o limite da propriedade de Montis.
Visitámos também outra área para onde está planeado para fevereiro um fogo controlado. Aprendemos como escolher a data, como preparar o local e a sua envolvente e o interesse de tal intervenção.
First we sincerely are thankfull for the opportunity to be part of MONTIS.
Our adventure with MONTIS began on the 7th of February when we discovered the forest of Carvalhais and the areas where we’ll have to work.
At first, we went to the main site where we are going to work, which you can see in flashy green on the following map. A controlled fire took place in this area 2 years ago, and it is now plantation time, which is the main task we will be doing in the area. The access to the area was only partially made, so our first task will be to create a safe access. The yellow line is the path between our home and the area on which we’ll walk to the area everyday. The white one is the delimitation of Montis’ property.
We also visited another area where there is a controlled fire planned during February. We learned about how to choose the date, how to prepare the area and its surroundings, the interest of such a maneuver.
As montanhas acima de Carvalhais são mais húmidas do que esperávamos, pois há muitos rios e muitas pequenas fontes de água.
Começámos realmente a trabalhar no dia 8 de fevereiro. O objetivo desse dia foi restaurar um caminho que servia de acesso à zona onde iremos plantar árvores nos próximos dias. Foi um pouco exigente porque o caminho estava cheio de arbustos, como podem ver na foto seguinte.
The mountains above Carvalhais are more wet than we expected as there are a lot of rivers and plenty of little water’s sources.
We really began to work on the 8th of February. The goal of that day was to restore a path that was used to access the area where we’ll plant trees in the coming days. It was a bit physical as the path was full of bramble, as you can see on the following photo.

Para o limpar, poderíamos utilizar diversas ferramentas como enxadas, tesouras ou serras. As enxadas serviam para cortar o silvado e, tanto quanto possível, retirar-lhes as raízes para evitar que voltassem a crescer. A tesoura e a serra serviam para cortar arbustos e ramos maiores.
Depois removemos os remanescentes de madeira morta e reunimo-los em grandes pilhas. Colocamos os ramos de madeira ao longo do caminho, não só para retardar o crescimento das silvas, mas também para os armazenar, pois podemos precisar deles para fazer alguma engenharia natural. Na verdade, a madeira pode ser utilizada para promover a presença de nutrientes no solo.
In order to clean it, we could use many tools like hoes, secateurs or saws. The hoes were used to cut the brambles and as much as possible, remove their roots to avoid their regrowth. The secateurs and the saw were used to cut bushes and bigger branches.
So we removed the scrambles and gathered them on big piles. We put the wood logs along the path, not only in order to slow the growth of scrambles, but also to stock them as we may need them to do some natural-engineering. Indeed, wood can be used to foster the presence of nutriments in the soil.
