Nos últimos dias participei em várias atividades de voluntariado com a MONTIS, acompanhando trabalhos de campo relacionados com a gestão e valorização de propriedades com interesse natural.
No dia 14 de janeiro, cheguei à sede da MONTIS, em Vouzela, onde tive a oportunidade de conhecer o espaço e de me informar sobre as propriedades onde iria trabalhar nos dias seguintes. Este contacto inicial foi feito através da leitura de documentos relacionados com os terrenos e as ações previstas, o que me permitiu ter uma melhor noção do contexto e dos objetivos do trabalho a realizar. Nesse dia ajudei também na organização e arrumação do material necessário para as atividades dos dias seguintes. No fim do dia, foi ainda possível conhecer um pouco da vila de Vouzela, onde fiquei alojada (Barão Guest House).

No primeiro dia realizámos uma visita técnica à propriedade da Serra d’El Rei, juntamente com os técnicos Guilherme e Afonso. O terreno encontra-se em bom estado de conservação e apresenta um elevado potencial ecológico. Não se observou uma presença significativa de espécies invasoras como acácias, embora se tenha identificado a presença de cana-comum (Arundo donax) nas linhas de água. Foi possível identificar várias espécies autóctones, entre as quais medronheiros, azinheiras, murtas, lentisqueiras e carrascos. Verificou-se também a existência de regeneração natural, com a presença de plântulas de pinheiro.
O trabalho incidiu sobretudo na abertura e marcação de acessos a zonas com potencial para futuras plantações, bem como ao longo de uma linha de água existente no terreno. A marcação de trilhos foi relativamente simples nas zonas de menor declive, embora o acesso à linha de água tenha exigido mais esforço devido à elevada densidade de canas e silvas.

Ainda neste dia visitámos um viveiro, onde recolhemos plantas que viriam a ser utilizadas nas ações seguintes. Ao final do dia deslocámo-nos para a Ericeira, onde ficámos alojados.
No dia 16, trabalhámos na propriedade da MONTIS na Malveira, com o objetivo de preparar o voluntariado mensal que teria lugar no dia seguinte. Após uma breve visita à área, iniciámos, com o apoio da voluntária Sara (aqui refere-se à Sara Teles), a limpeza da zona destinada à plantação. As tarefas passaram pela remoção de silvas, lixo e acácias mortas que tinham sido descascadas noutras ações de voluntariado. A madeira resultante foi maioritariamente reaproveitada para criar uma barreira natural, com o intuito de reduzir a deposição de lixo no local.
Durante este dia tive também a oportunidade de acompanhar a instalação de uma câmara de fotoarmadilhagem, o que me permitiu compreender melhor o funcionamento do equipamento e os critérios usados para a escolha do local de instalação. No final do dia, houve ainda tempo para um breve passeio junto ao mar.

No dia 17, regressámos à propriedade da Malveira para a ação de plantação, que contou com a participação de vários voluntários. Ao longo do dia foram plantadas cerca de 80 árvores e arbustos nativos, incluindo lódão (Celtis australis), carvalho-alvarinho (Quercus robur), sobreiro (Quercus suber), medronheiro (Arbutus unedo) e pilriteiro (Crataegus monogyna). Neste dia foi também possível observar que árvores plantadas em ações anteriores se encontravam a crescer bem, o que demonstra a eficácia do trabalho de plantação realizado.

Ao longo destes dias realizei também vários registos de espécies no iNaturalist, principalmente de plantas e fungos. Foi ainda possível observar uma águia de asa redonda na Malveira e uma larva de pirilampo na Serra d’El Rei, contribuindo para uma experiência de voluntariado particularmente enriquecedora do ponto de vista da biodiversidade.

Over the past few days, I took part in several volunteer activities with MONTIS, accompanying fieldwork related to the management and enhancement of properties with natural value.
On the 14th January, I arrived at the MONTIS headquarters in Vouzela, where I had the opportunity to get to know the space and learn about the properties where I would be working over the following days. This initial contact was made through reading documents related to the sites and the planned activities, which helped me gain a better understanding of the context and objectives of the work to be carried out. On that day, I also helped organise and prepare the equipment needed for the activities scheduled for the following days. At the end of the day, I had the opportunity to explore a bit of the town of Vouzela, where I stayed overnight (Barão Guest House).
On the first day, we carried out a technical visit to the Serra d’El Rei property, together with technicians Guilherme and Afonso. The site is in good condition and shows a high ecological potential. No significant presence of invasive species such as acacias was observed, although the presence of giant reed was identified in the watercourses. Several native species were identified, including strawberry trees and holm oaks. Natural regeneration was also observed, with the presence of pine seedlings.
The work focused mainly on opening and marking access routes to areas with potential for future planting, as well as to an existing watercourse on the site. Marking the trails was relatively straightforward in areas with gentler slopes, although accessing the watercourse required more effort due to the high density of reeds and brambles.
Later that same day, we visited a nursery, where we collected plants that would be used in the following activities. At the end of the day, we travelled to Ericeira, where we stayed overnight.
On the 16th, we worked on the MONTIS property in Malveira, with the aim of preparing the monthly volunteer activity that would take place the following day. After a brief visit to the area, we began clearing the planting site with the support of the volunteer Sara (here referring to Sara Teles). The tasks mainly involved the removal of brambles, litter and dead acacias that had been previously ring-barked. Most of the resulting wood was reused to create a natural barrier, with the aim of reducing illegal dumping in the area.
During this day, I also had the opportunity to accompany the installation of a camera trap, which allowed me to better understand how the equipment works and the criteria used when selecting the most suitable location for installation. At the end of the day, there was still time for a short walk by the sea.
On the 17th, we returned to the Malveira property for the planting activity, which involved several volunteers. Throughout the day, around 80 native trees and shrubs were planted, including nettle tree (Celtis australis), English oak (Quercus robur), cork oak (Quercus suber), strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo) and hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna). On this day, it was also possible to observe that trees planted during previous actions were growing well, demonstrating the effectiveness of the planting work carried out.
Over the course of these days, I also recorded several species on iNaturalist, mainly plants and fungi. At Serra d’El Rei, it was also possible to observe a bird of prey and a glow-worm larva, contributing to a volunteer experience that was particularly enriching from a biodiversity perspective.
