21-25 setembro
Segunda-feira / Monday
On Monday it was just Marie-Lou and Flora. We were first tasked to build a shelf at the office.
Which sounded so simple at first turned out to be hours of work as the shelf only came with a very brief and uninformative manual. Working in a team made the challenge lot easier to overcome and the success so much more rewarding. After we finally managed to build the shelf and writing our introductions the day had already went by and we headed back to our hostel.
Terça-feira / Tuesday
Passámos o resto do dia a organizar as prateleiras.
On Tuesday, the original plan was to go to an area where a wildfire happened and build little walls to prevent extreme erosion. However, because of the weather Teresa decided to save us from a heat stroke, and we worked another day in the office. The second shelf had to be set up. With the other team members and our experiences from the day before we managed to set everything together much faster. The rest of the day we organised and restock the shelves. After we finished the office, our next job was to check the inventory and clean the garage.
The best part of the day was the victory after we managed to set up the shelf in a new record time. After second guessing our competences the day before, we proudly turned into constructors:))
Quarta-feira / Wednesday
Wednesday was our first day of working in the forest this week. Due to the work that we did the week before there were not so many uncut trees left. Still, we found some that we could work on. This time we had a new job. Trees that were over 50 cm thick needed to be marked. During the work time feels different. Sometimes the time rushes so fast, that a half workday felt like an hour, yet other times time passes really slowly.
In the evening we organized a game night. We played cards and the game "Dixit" that we found in one of the MONTIS shelfs. Sometimes we found references associated with MONTIS. These were the most fun rounds. What I really liked about it was that we spend the evening as a whole group including Margarida even though she doesn't sleep at our guesthouse.
Quinta-feira / Thursday
This Thursday was our last day with Margarida. A Portuguese volunteer who stayed and worked with us for two weeks. Luckily the temperatures fell so we could go to Quintas das Lamas and debark acacias together for the last time. Additionally, we received a role of red/white tape to mark acacias thicker than 50 cm so they could get cut professionally. With many funny conversations, singing together and enjoying the shade of the trees the day passed, and we went back to the MONTIS office to return our equipment.
Sexta-feira / Friday
Friday, we started packing our things to check out of our first guesthouse in Vouzela. After short moments of panic, collected strength and a little bit of creativity we managed to stuff all of our belongings into our suitcases. Then we headed to the MONTIS office where we began writing our weekly report. After lunch break, we went to Quintas das Lamas to mark some more trees. There we got picked up to go grocery shopping at Lidl and arrive at our second home at a camping site.
The same evening, we quickly repacked our things, booked bus tickets and called some hostels last minute. With a lot of help from Guilherme we could catch a bus to Aveiro and spend the weekend at the beach and in the beautiful city:))
Segunda-feira / Monday
Infelizmente, começou a chover a meio do dia. Tivemos de interromper a recolha, pois as bolotas molhadas começariam a ganhar bolor se ficassem guardadas num saco durante alguns dias.
On Monday, we worked at the camping site gathering acorns to replant them on other properties. Searching for English oaks we explored the entire camping site and found not only a little lake with boats, a sip line and a swimming pool but also a little climbing forest. Unfortunately, it started raining in the middle of the day. We had to stop gathering because the wet acorns would start to mould after leaving them in a bag for a few days.
Terça-feira / Tuesday
Tuesday was our first day of going out of the camping site. Guilherme picked us up with the MONTIS truck. Inside there was a surprise for us. Guilherme brought his dog Nina. Then we drove towards the mountains. We didn't what we should accept or how long the drive would take. During the ride a rainbow appeared in the sky, and we knew that this must be a sign. After approximately one hour we went out of the car, and we stopped foot next to the "Gate to hell". The view on the mountains was amazing, and we really enjoyed being in the middle of nowhere. Then we drove for another 20 minutes to a MONTIS property. There our task was to pick some acorns and berries. Nearby there was a small lake and the dog and Marie-Lou took a swim in it. We collected two big sacks of acorns and with that our workday ended. On the way back we stopped in a tiny village to pick up some stuff. We were really surprised that only 7 people lived in it. We had much fun, picking figs from the tree. After another hour we reached the camping site.
Quarta-feira / Wednesday
On Wednesday Guilherme picked us up and we headed to a burnt down forest. We quickly took a stop at a gas station for coffee, Guilherme was really kind and invited us. When we arrived at our destination a charred woodland awaited us. It was heartbreaking to see the burnt leftovers of what once was a beautiful forest. Guilherme showed us the way and gave us all necessary instructions. Our task was to plant the acorns. It felt very meditative. The day went by in a blink. On our way back we listened to music and reflected on the past few weeks.
Previously we were told not to wear anything light colored which turned out to be good advice as the coal left us looking very unkempt.
Which at the end of the day made our showers feel that much better. It was a great and productive day.
Quinta-feira /Thursday
On Thursday, it was again time to gather acorns on the camping site. This time we were better prepared and knew were the best English oaks stand. However, over the week many worms took the chance to eat the acorns on the ground. This way it was growing harder for us to find good ones with seeds. Luckily the weather was playing along, and we spend a sunny but not too hot day outside:))
