The MONTIS volunteers tell us about their week of volunteering from April 13 to 19. Read their testimony below!
Segunda-feira / Monday
Esta semana começou com uma manhã bonita, cheia de surpresas. Espontaneamente, o Sr. Joaquim veio buscar-nos às 9h45 e deixou-nos no lago de Meruge. A partir daí fizemos a nossa caminhada tranquila até à propriedade de Cabrieira, na montanha, onde ouvimos os coros dos pássaros a cantar para nós. Quando finalmente começámos a trabalhar, fizemos questão de beber muita água por causa do calor que se fazia sentir. Tivemos sorte porque grande parte do sol esteve escondido atrás de uma fina camada de nuvens; caso contrário, não teríamos conseguido trabalhar ao máximo nem podar, em conjunto, as 32 árvores que conseguimos hoje. Ao final do dia, a técnica Inês veio buscar-nos e levou-nos ao Continente de Oliveira de Frades para fazermos as compras de comida para as próximas duas semanas. Como já tínhamos o plano de refeições e a lista de compras preparados com antecedência, foi tudo muito rápido.
This week started with a beautiful morning full of surprises. Spontaneously Mr Joaquim came to pick us up at 9:45am and dropped us off at the Meruge lake. From there we had our quiet walk to our Cabrieira property up the mountain, where we listened to the bird choirs singing to us. Finally getting to work we made sure to drink a lot of water because of the hot weather we had. It was only to our luck that most of the sun was hiding behind a thin layer of cloud curtains, otherwise we definitely couldn’t have worked to our fullest and pruned 32 trees together as we managed today. In the evening technician Inês came to pick us up and drove us to Oliveira de Frades Continente to do our shopping for food for the next two weeks. With our meal plan and a shopping list already ready beforehand - it took us no time.
Terça-feira / Tuesday
No dia seguinte, o nosso fiel “taxista”, o Sr. Joaquim, veio novamente buscar-nos às 9h30. No caminho montanha acima, avistámos um pássaro à beira da estrada. O topo da cabeça era vermelho e o corpo tinha tons de preto, branco e castanho. Infelizmente, com o breve vislumbre que tivemos, não conseguimos identificar a espécie. Depois, ao caminharmos até ao local de trabalho, percebemos rapidamente que teríamos de ter especial cuidado com os ventos fortes e possíveis nuvens de chuva, já que a aplicação meteorológica não indicava boas condições, prevendo chuva e até tempestade ao final do dia. Durante a caminhada, já apanhámos alguns momentos de chuva ligeira. Ainda assim, as condições meteorológicas estavam ideais para trabalhar — nem demasiado quente, nem demasiado frio. No final, conseguimos podar 28 carvalhos e, ao mapearmos a área, ficámos contentes por perceber que estamos quase a meio do trabalho na propriedade.
The following day our loyal taxi driver Mr. Joaquim picked us up again at 9:30am. On the way up the mountain we got a glimpse of a bird on the side of the road. The top of its head was red and by itself it was black, white and brown. Sadly we couldn’t identify the actual species with the little glimpse of memory we had. Afterwards whilst walking to our jobsite we quickly learned that working today we had to be extra careful of the strong winds and possible rain clouds because the weather app was not looking too good with promising rain and even a storm in the evening and on our walk we already got a taste of occasional light rain. Nonetheless, today's weather conditions were just right for working with us being exactly not too hot and not too cold. We ended up getting to prune 28 oaks and whilst mapping out our area we were happy to realise that we are nearly half way through our whole property.
Quarta e Quinta-feira / Wednesday and Thursday
Na quarta-feira, voltámos finalmente a reunir-nos com os novos voluntários, depois de uma semana a trabalhar em tarefas separadas. Juntos, seguimos um novo caminho desde o lago até à montanha, até ao nosso local de trabalho, tal como o Guilherme nos mostrou. Foi muito agradável sair da rotina habitual de percorrer sempre a mesma estrada. Enquanto nos ajudávamos e orientávamos mutuamente pelas zonas mais densas e difíceis de atravessar, no meio dos arbustos na encosta, conseguimos podar 13 árvores sob o calor do sol.
No dia seguinte, já estávamos mais eficientes e familiarizados com a nova área de poda e, em conjunto, terminámos 17 árvores. Foi uma manhã muito tranquila, mas um meio-dia agitado. Quando o Guilherme veio buscar-nos à tarde, respondeu a algumas das nossas dúvidas sobre os limites da propriedade e alguns conjuntos de árvores. A Viola melhorou o seu vestuário de trabalho, optando por uma camisola mais prática e elegante que protege os braços dos arranhões das plantas com espinhos. A Lola trouxe uns binóculos pequenos muito bons para observar aves durante a pausa de almoço. A Lisett, acidentalmente, lascou um dente enquanto lutava contra os arbustos com a tesoura.
On Wednesday we finally got reunited again with our new volunteers after working on separate tasks for a week now. Together we took a new different path from the lake up the mountains to our work field as Guilherme showed us. It was very nice to take a break from our regular routine of walking the same car road to our property. Whilst helping and guiding each other through the rougher and thicker area of the bushes on the side of the mountain, we managed to prune 13 trees in the heat of the sun.
The next day we were more efficient and familiar with the next part of the area where we are pruning and together we finished 17 trees. It was a very quiet morning but hectic noon. When Guilherme came to pick us up in the afternoon, he answered some of our burning questions about the property lines and some of the tree complexes. Viola upgraded her work clothes to more fashionable and practical shirt that covers the arms from getting scratched by the thorny plants. Lola brought very awesome pair of small binoculars with her to watch birds on our lunch break. Lisett accidentally chipped her tooth whilst fighting against the bushes with her scissors.
Sexta-feira / Friday
Para terminar a semana, podamos mais 20 carvalhos. Excecionalmente, hoje começámos o dia uma hora mais cedo, trabalhámos mais tempo durante a manhã, almoçámos e depois regressámos ao lago. Lá ainda tivemos tempo para mergulhar os pés na água fresca e agradável enquanto esperávamos que o Sr. Joaquim viesse buscar-nos.
Até agora, podamos 296 carvalhos ao longo de 14 dias na montanha, na propriedade de Cabrieira. A área podada corresponde a 6.152,85 metros quadrados de um total de 19.929,42 metros quadrados. Ao olhar para estes números, sentimos orgulho no trabalho que realizámos.
Finishing up this week we pruned 20 more oaks. Exceptionally today we started our day an hour earlier, worked longer in the morning, had our lunch and then set our course back to the lake. There we had just enough time to even dip our feet into the cool and lovely lake while waiting for Mr. Joaquim to pick us up.
Up until now we have pruned 296 oaks in the span of 14 days up the mountain in the Cabrieira property. The pruned area holds 6,152.85 square meters from the total of 19,929.42 square meters. Looking at the numbers we are proud of the work we have done.
