Muitas mudanças aconteceram no grupo de voluntários esta semana. Chegaram novos voluntários e alguns partiram. Ainda assim, todos concordamos que foi uma semana muito divertida.
A lot of changes happened within the group of volunteers this week. New ones came and some left. But we all agree that we had a very fun week.
Segunda-feira / Monday
Esta semana começámos o primeiro dia de trabalho mais cedo do que o habitual, pois tivemos de nos encontrar com os trabalhadores florestais (sapadores florestais) para discutir qual será a próxima área a ser limpa para podermos plantar na propriedade do Baldio de Carvalhais.
Depois disso, demos as boas-vindas aos novos voluntários vindos de França (do projeto Parcours le Monde Sud-Ouest) e informámo-los sobre a nova propriedade onde iremos trabalhar e sobre a organização geral das atividades. Quando tudo ficou claro, fomos trabalhar noutra área da propriedade para fazer manutenção das árvores já plantadas, mas o trabalho teve de ser interrompido devido às condições meteorológicas inesperadamente más.
This week we started our first work day of the week earlier than usual because we had to meet the forest workers (forest sappers) to discuss about where they will clear the next area for us to plant in Baldio de Carvalhais property.
Afterwards we welcomed our new volunteers from France (from the project Parcours le Monde Sud-Ouest) and informed them about the new property we will be working on and the overall order of the things. When all things were clear, we went to work in another area in the property to maintain the already planted trees but the work was cut short by the unexpectedly bad weather conditions.
Terça-feira / Tuesday
No dia seguinte, em contraste com o dia anterior, o tempo estava inesperadamente bom, por isso voltámos ao campo e plantámos 80 carvalhos perto do acesso às faixas do fogo controlado. Terminámos o dia a cortar alguns arbustos junto à estrada. Achámos que seria uma boa ideia levar os montes de ramos para o nosso alojamento, para que pudéssemos limpá-los e cortá-los em estacas para marcar as plantas. Desta forma, teríamos uma tarefa mais simples, mas igualmente importante, para realizar nos dias de mau tempo excecional.
On the following day the weather in contrast to yesterday was unexpectedly nice so we went back to the field and planted 80 english oaks near by the pathway that goes until the prescribed burn area. We ended the day by cutting some bushes down by the road. We thought that it would be a good idea to take the branch piles to our accommodation so we could clean and cut the branches into good sticks to mark the plants. This way we would have something easier but equally as important to do on days with exceptionally bad weather.
Quarta-feira / Wednesday
Na quarta-feira tivemos exatamente o tipo de mau tempo em que preferimos evitar trabalhar no campo, por isso decidimos recolher rapidamente mais montes de ramos na montanha e trazê-los todos para casa, para trabalhar de forma mais confortável. Passámos toda a manhã juntos a limpar e cortar os ramos. Mais tarde, durante a tarde, dividimo-nos em grupos: dois de nós foram para o escritório realizar tarefas teóricas tais como atualizar os registos de biodiversidade, um foi com o técnico Afonso buscar o beliche para o nosso alojamento e os restantes ficaram a cortar estacas.
On Wednesday we had exactly the type of bad weather where we hope to avoid working on the field so we decided to continue to quickly gather more branch piles from the mountains and bring it all back to our house to work more comfortably there. The whole noon we spent together cleaning and cutting the branches. Later in the afternoon we split into groups. Two of us went into the office to do office tasks like updating the biodiversity reccords, one went together with the technician Afonso to get the bunkbed for our accommodation and the others stayed behind to cut sticks.
Quinta-feira / Thursday
Devido a mais um dia de mau tempo e ventos fortes, parte dos voluntários ficou a cortar estacas e os outros permaneceram no escritório a realizar tarefas de escritório. Resolvemos o problema das coordenadas no iNaturalist e começámos a organizar e atualizar, numa tabela de Excel, a informação das observações dos últimos três meses. Por volta do meio-dia, organizámos também a nossa coleção de botas de borracha na garagem e despedimo-nos de uma das voluntáriás do grupo.
Due to another day of bad weather and strong winds, part of the volunteers cut sticks and others stayed at the office to do office tasks. We figured out the problem with the coordinates on iNaturalist and began to organise and update observation information of the past 3 months to Excel table. Around noon we also organised our rubber boots collection in the garage and said goodbye to one of the volunteers in our group.
Sexta-feira / Friday
Apesar de o tempo estar muito instável, conseguimos finalmente voltar ao campo. Juntos, conseguimos plantar e marcar 57 carvalhos ao longo da estrada onde os arbustos já tinham sido limpos. Mais tarde, ao final da tarde, despedimo-nos da Diana, uma voluntária que terminou as suas quatro semanas de trabalho árduo.
Even though the weather was very bipolar we still managed to finally get back into the field. Together we managed to plant and mark 57 oak trees on the side of the road where the bushes were already cleared. Later in the evening we said our goodbyes to Diana one of our volunteers who finished her 4 weeks of hard work.
