The MONTIS volunteers tell us how their volunteering week, from the 26th to the 30th of January, went. Read their testimony below!
Segunda-feira /Monday
Na segunda-feira começámos o dia por recolher plantas e equipamento, com o objetivo de plantar 30 pilriteiros (Crataegus monogyna) e 30 azereiros (Prunus lusitanica) na propriedade Cabrieira em Carvalhal de Vermilhas. Apesar da chuva não nos ter impedido de ir para o campo, a tempestade dos últimos dias provocou uma subida significativa do caudal do rio, que acabou por derrubar a “ponte” utilizada para o atravessar. Com a ajuda do técnico Guilherme, tentámos encontrar alternativas para atravessar o rio, mas as condições não eram seguras, o que nos levou a alterar os planos para esse dia.
Após o almoço seguimos viagem até à propriedade Cerdeirinha, onde realizámos trabalhos de limpeza de mato, com o objetivo de aumentar a largura de um corredor que já tinha sido anteriormente aberto. Este corredor servirá, futuramente, para a realização de ações de plantação.
On Monday, we started the day by collecting plants and equipment, with the aim of planting 30 hawthorns (Crataegus monogyna) and 30 Portuguese laurels (Prunus lusitanica) at Cabrieira property in Carvalhal de Vermilhas. Although the rain itself did not prevent us from going into the field, the storm of the previous days caused a significant rise in the river’s water level, which led to the collapse of the “bridge” we normally use to cross it. With the support of technician Guilherme, we explored alternative ways of crossing the river, but the conditions were considered too dangerous, and we therefore had to change our plans.
After lunch, we travelled to the Cerdeirinha property, where we carried out bush clearing work in order to widen a corridor that had already been opened. This corridor will later be used for planting activities.
Terça-feira / Tuesday
No dia seguinte voltámos à propriedade Cabrieira em Carvalhal de Vermilhas, desta vez com duas paletes que nos permitiram atravessar o rio. Apesar da chuva, do vento, da neve, do granizo e também de alguns períodos de sol, conseguimos cumprir o objetivo do dia anterior, plantando os 30 pilriteiros e os 30 azereiros.
Antes de regressarmos a casa, passámos ainda pelo viveiro, onde ajudámos o Guilherme a etiquetar os tabuleiros de plantas.
On the following day, we returned to the Cabrieira property in Carvalhal de Vermilhas, this time with two pallets that allowed us to cross the river. Despite the rain, wind, snow, hail and even a few sunny moments, we managed to complete the objective from the previous day by planting the 30 hawthorns and the 30 Portuguese laurels.
Before heading back home, we also stopped by the nursery, where we helped Guilherme label the plant trays.
Quarta-feira / Wednesday
Na quarta-feira, o trabalho centrou-se sobretudo em tarefas de logística e plantação. Durante a manhã, após prepararmos o material necessário, deslocámo-nos ao viveiro para contabilizar os tabuleiros de plantas a devolver à CPL, onde posteriormente entregámos esse material e recolhemos novas plantas.
Durante a tarde, realizámos trabalhos de plantação na Cabrieira em Carvalhal de Vermilhas, onde foram plantados quatro azereiros e 40 freixos (Fraxinus angustifolia). De seguida, plantámos as restantes espécies selecionadas durante a manhã em Levides, nomeadamente 13 castanheiros (Castanea sativa), 10 pilriteiros e 30 freixos.
Ao longo do dia ocorreram ainda algumas tarefas de organização, incluindo a mudança de quartos na Barão Guest House, bem como uma deslocação a São Pedro do Sul com o Guilherme.
On Wednesday, the work focused mainly on logistics and planting activities. During the morning, after preparing the necessary equipment, we went to the nursery to count the plant trays to be returned to CPL. We then delivered these trays and collected new plants.
In the afternoon, planting work was carried out at the Cabrieira property in Carvalhal de Vermilhas, where four Portuguese laurels and 40 European ash trees (Fraxinus angustifolia) were planted. Afterwards, we planted the remaining species selected earlier in the day in Levides, namely 13 sweet chestnut trees (Castanea sativa), 10 hawthorns and 30 European ash trees
Throughout the day, some organisational tasks were also carried out, including a change of rooms at the Barão Guest House and a trip to São Pedro do Sul with Guilherme.
Quinta-feira / Thursday
Na quinta-feira tivemos um dia de folga. Aproveitámos para descansar, mas também para fazer uma longa caminhada. Entrámos na ecopista em Vouzela e caminhámos até à aldeia da Corredoura, em São Vicente de Lafões. Ficámos deslumbrados com a paisagem.
On Thursday, we had a day off. We used this day to rest, but also to go on a long walk. We entered the ecotrail in Vouzela and walked to the small village of Corredoura, in São Vicente de Lafões. We were amazed by the landscape.
Sexta-feira / Friday
Na sexta-feira começámos por deixar as plantas que o Guilherme tinha recolhido no dia anterior no alojamento onde os novos voluntários irão ficar hospedados, ficando a plantação prevista para a semana seguinte. De seguida, deslocámo-nos ao viveiro para organizar as plantas adquiridas ao longo da semana.
Durante a tarde, limpámos os carros, arrumámos o material na garagem, arranjámos algum do equipamento e finalizámos o relatório semanal, deixando tudo preparado para o início do trabalho na semana seguinte.
Neste dia despedimo-nos também de dois voluntários com quem partilhámos momentos muito bons ao longo das últimas duas semanas, apesar da chuva.
On Friday, we began by dropping off the plants that Guilherme had collected the previous day at the accommodation where the new volunteers will be staying, with planting planned for the following week. We then went to the nursery to organise the plants acquired throughout the week.
During the afternoon, we cleaned the vehicles, organised the equipment in the garage, repaired some of the equipment and finalised the weekly report, leaving everything ready for the start of work the following week.
On this day, we also said goodbye to two volunteers with whom we shared many good moments over the past two weeks, despite the rain.
