The MONTIS volunteers tell us how their volunteering week, from the 2nd to the 7th of March, went. Read their testimony below!
Segunda-feira / Monday
Ficámos felizes por começar a semana a conhecer o nosso novo voluntário, Felix, alemão, do projeto NaturKultur. Juntamente com a nossa técnica Inês, demos-lhe as boas-vindas e explicámos tudo o que era necessário saber sobre a propriedade, as aplicações e os equipamentos. Depois continuámos o nosso trabalho habitual de campo na segunda área do Baldio de Carvalhais. Com a sorte de termos bom tempo, plantámos muitas espécies diferentes de arbustos e árvores — ao todo, 118.
We were happy to start our week by getting to know our new german volunteer Felix, from NaturKulture project. With our technician Inês, we welcomed him and explained everything necessary for him to know about the property, apps and equipment. Afterwards we continued our usual fieldwork in the second area of Baldio de Carvalhais. With the luck of good weather we planted a lot of different species of bushes and trees, together 118.
Terça-feira / Tuesday
No dia seguinte voltámos a trabalhar no mesmo terreno, mas desta vez sozinhos. Começámos ao meio-dia com um sol bonito e terminámos de plantar todos os amieiros (Alnus glutinosa) que ainda tinham ficado nos tabuleiros do dia anterior. Depois disso fiz-mos um monte de estacas e esperámos até a Inês chegar com novos tabuleiros de plantas. Ao fim da tarde plantámos 10 castanheiros (Castanea sativa).
The next day we were working on the same field again but this time by ourselves. We started at noon with beautiful sun and finished planting all the Alnus Glutinosa that we had left in the trays from yesterday. After that we made a bunch of sticks and waited until Inês would come with new plant trays for us. In the evening we planted ten chestnut trees.
Quarta-feira / Wednesday
O segundo dia a trabalhar de forma autónoma no terreno correu bem. Todo o dia, desde o meio-dia até ao final da tarde, esteve bonito e quente. Graças às boas condições de trabalho e ao bom ânimo, conseguimos plantar 140 teixos (Taxus baccata). O dia passou de forma calma e constante.
The second day of working autonomously on the field went smoothly. The whole day from noon until the evening was beautiful and warm. Because of the good working conditions and high spirits we managed to plant 140 common yews. The day went by slow and steady.
Quinta-feira / Thursday
Como terminámos ontem o trabalho na segunda área, levámos todas as ferramentas e seguimos para outra zona mais acima na encosta. O nosso objetivo nesse dia era plantar 54 teixos (Taxus baccata) nesse local. Para isso tivemos primeiro de limpar alguns arbustos para abrir espaço, depois plantar e marcar com estacas. Fizemos tudo com cuidado e rapidamente para não sermos apanhados pelos ventos fortes e pela chuva durante a tarde.
Since we finished working in the second area yesterday, we took all our tools and set our destination to another area more uphill. Our goal on this day was to plant 54 Taxus baccata there. For that we first needed to clean up bushes to make some space, then plant and mark with sticks. We did it carefully and quickly as to not get caught in the strong winds and rain in the afternoon.
Sexta-feira / Friday
Finalmente terminámos a semana a plantar 20 teixos na propriedade de Cabrieira e 40 carvalhos alvarinho (Quercus robur) e 6 teixos (Taxus baccata) no Baldio de Carvalhais. Ao almoço fomos a Vouzela e comemos bem num café simpático com pessoal muito acolhedor. Depois de ficarmos de barriga cheia, limpámos por dentro os dois carros da associação MONTIS. Foi uma primeira semana produtiva e interessante para o nosso novo voluntário da Alemanha.
Finally, we end the week by planting 20 taxus and 20 alders in Cabrieira property and 40 Quercus robur and 6 Taxus baccata in Baldio de Carvalhais. For lunch we went to Vouzela and ate well in a cute cafe with welcoming personnel. When our stomachs were full we cleaned both of MONTIS organisations cars from the inside. It was a productive and interesting first week for our new volunteer from Germany.
