The MONTIS volunteers tell us about their week of volunteering from April 13 to 19. Read their testimony below!
Segunda-feira / Monday
A nova semana recebeu-nos com um tempo nublado, frio e chuvoso. Assim, vestimos o nosso equipamento de chuva, com várias camadas de roupa por baixo, e fomos com o nosso simpático taxista até Cabrieira. Na esperança de apanhar pelo menos alguns raios de sol, subimos a montanha para continuar a podar as árvores. Para facilitar o trabalho futuro, propusemo-nos também limpar alguns caminhos e marcar no Google Earth a área onde já tínhamos trabalhado. No final, sem termos tido a sorte de ver o sol, sentimo-nos produtivos e aquecidos, prontos para voltar para casa. A conquista do dia foram 22 árvores podadas e muitas pilhas de ramos cortados.
The new week welcomed us with misty frosty and frizzly weather. So, we put on our rain gear with many layers below and went with our nice taxi driver to Cabrieira. Hoping to get at least a couple rays of sun, we walked up the mountain to continue pruning the trees. To make future work easier, we also made it our goal to clean up some pathways and mark the area on Google Earth where we already got some work done. At the end of the shift, with no luck of seeing the sun, we felt productive and warm, ready to go home. The achievement of the day are 22 pruned trees and many piles of cut branches.
Terça-feira / Tuesday
Saímos de casa de manhã, sentindo-nos gratos, pois não estava tão frio como no dia anterior; o vento gelado tinha acalmado. No alto da montanha e no meio das nuvens, começámos a podar os carvalhos mais uma vez. À hora do almoço, já tínhamos conseguido fazer duas grandes pilhas de ramos cortados, que pareciam muito confortáveis e abrigadas. Por isso, passámos metade da nossa pausa para o almoço nas pilhas, a dormir uma sesta e a observar as nuvens. Bem descansados, continuámos a nossa busca por carvalhos para podar. No final do dia, terminámos com sucesso a área que nos tínhamos proposto como meta, contando 27 árvores podadas.
We left the house in the morning, feeling grateful, for it was not as chilly as the day before, the icy wind had calmed. Up in the mountain and deep in the clouds, we started pruning the oaks yet again. By lunchtime we successfully made two big piles of cut branches, which looked perfectly cozy and sheltered. Therefore, half of our lunch break, we spent in the piles napping and watching the clouds. Well rested we continued our search for oaks to prune. By the end of the day, we successfully finished the area, we had set ourselves as a milestone, counting 27 pruned trees.
Quarta-feira / Wednesday
Encantados com o sol e ainda motivados pelo nosso feito do dia anterior, subimos a montanha para mais um dia de poda. Começámos por estabelecer um novo marco, decidindo qual a área a podar nos dias seguintes. Rapidamente percebemos que, semanas antes, já tínhamos realizado algum trabalho nessa zona. Por isso, ainda precisávamos de empilhar os ramos cortados. O objetivo das pilhas de ramos é queimá-las nos meses mais frios, quando é mais seguro. Por isso, certificámo-nos de não fazer as pilhas demasiado perto dos carvalhos. Saímos da propriedade com mais 16 árvores podadas. A caminho do carro, deparámo-nos com esta pequena salamandra, que parecia estar a desfrutar de um pequeno banho de sol na rua.
Delighted by the sun and still motivated from our achievement the day before, we went up the mountain for another day of pruning. We started off by setting another milestone in which we decided on a new area to prune in over the next days. Quickly we realized that weeks prior we had already gotten some work done in that area. For that we still needed to pile up the cut branches. The purpose of the branch piles is to burn them down in colder months, when it’s safer. Therefore, we made sure to not build the piles to close to the oaks. We left the property with an additional 16 trees being pruned. On our way to car, we came across this little salamander, who seemed to enjoy a little sunbath on the street.
Quinta-feira / Thursday
No nosso último dia de trabalho da semana, fomos finalmente agraciados com temperaturas agradáveis. Aproveitando aquele sol maravilhoso, começámos logo a procurar novas árvores para podar. Afinal, a nova área, que definimos como o nosso marco, não tem tantos carvalhos como a área anterior. Por isso, passámos muito tempo a cortar arbustos para abrir caminho até aos carvalhos. Podámos 24 carvalhos, e chegamos ao final do dia ansiosos por passar o fim de semana em Lisboa, pelo que tirámos a sexta-feira de folga.
On our last workday of the week, we were finally blessed with pleasant temperatures. Taking in that beautiful sunshine, we started right away with the search for new trees to prune. It turns out that the new area, which we set as our milestone, is not as populated with oaks as the area before. So, we spend a lot of time cutting bushes to make our way to the oak trees. At the end of the day we pruned 24 oaks, looking forward to spending our weekend in Lisbon, for which we took Friday off.
