Segunda / Monday
Na segunda-feira, fizemos o controlo da espécie invasora acacia de espigas (Acacia melanoxylon) na Quintas das Lamas. Ao tentarmos descascar a casca, caímos várias vezes, mas levantamo-nos sempre com um sorriso.
On Monday we managed the invasive species Acacia at Quintas das Lamas. While trying to peel the bark for extraction, we’ve had fallen many times, but we always get back up with a smile.
Terça / Tuesday
Esta terça-feira tivemos o dia de folga, pois no sábado iriamos trabalhar perto de Peniche, onde participariamos num passeio com outros voluntários numa nova propriedade da MONTIS.
This Tuesday we had the day off because we would work on Saturday near Peniche, in which we were going on an educational outing with other volunteers to a new MONTIS property.
Quarta / Wednesday
Na quarta-feira, podamos carvalhos em Cabrieira com a ajuda dos voluntários alemães. Fizemos tantos progressos que conseguimos começar numa nova área. O trabalho foi fisicamente exigente porque o terreno é muito íngreme e o solo está um pouco instável devido aos ramos velhos. O dia começou bem (o sol estava a brilhar), mas depois fomos atingidos por uma chuva torrencial, acompanhada de granizo. A Estrellia não tinha impermeável, por isso foi a que ficou mais encharcada, mas depois conseguimos abrigar-nos.
On Wednesday we pruned oaks in Cabrieira plot with the help of the German volunteers. We made such good progress that we were able to start on a new area. The work was physically demanding because the terrain is very steep and the ground is a bit unstable due to old branches. The day started off well (the sun was out) but then a heavy downpour hit us, along with hail. Estrellia didn’t have a raincoat, so she got soaked the worst, but we managed to take shelter.
Quinta / Thursday
Na quinta-feira, acordámos cedo. O Guilherme foi buscar-nos para irmos trabalhar perto de Lisboa. Fizemos uma viagem de quatro horas com os nossos colegas alemães, o Axel e o Pascal. Assim que chegámos, descascámos os troncos mais grossos de acácias. Para ajudar a desfazer a pilha de ramos, a Estrellia agarrou-se ao tronco como um panda, e a Lola quase caiu na pilha enquanto tentava compactá-la. Foi um momento repleto de risos.
On Thursday we woke up early. Guilherme picked us up to go to work near Lisbon. We drove for four hours with our German colleagues Axel and Pascal. Once we arrived, we stripped the bark from the thickest trunks of Acacia trees. To help break up the pile of branches, Estrellia hung onto the trunk like a panda, and Lola almost fell through the pile while trying to pack it down. It was a moment filled with laughter.
Sexta / Friday
Nesta sexta-feira, estávamos no mesmo local do dia anterior, a fazer o mesmo trabalho numa área diferente. À tarde, conhecemos a Sara, voluntária regular da MONTIS. Ela mostrou-nos algumas técnicas novas para facilitar o nosso trabalho. Para o almoço, comemos num local com uma vista magnífica com o Pascal e o Axel e, depois, balançámo-nos num baloiço com vista para a bela paisagem. Após o nosso dia de trabalho, a Sara levou-nos à Ericeira para ver o oceano e explorar a zona. Foi um dia maravilhoso e um encontro encantador que provavelmente não vamos esquecer.
This Friday, we were at the same place as the day before, doing the same work in a different area. In the afternoon, we met Sara, regular volunteer of MONTIS. She showed us some new techniques to make our work easier. For lunch, we ate at a spot with a magnificent view with Pascal and Axel, and then we swung on a swing overlooking the beautiful landscape. After our day of work, Sara took us to Ericeira to see the ocean and explore the area. It was a wonderful day and a lovely encounter that we’re likely not to forget.
Sábado / Saturday
No sábado, realizámos uma atividade do MONTIS na Serra d'El Rei, em Peniche. A nossa tarefa consistiu em utilizar a aplicação iNaturalist para registar as espécies de borboletas e a flora encontradas no local. Tivemos a oportunidade de conhecer um naturalista especialista em lepidópteros; foi muito enriquecedor para nós conhecer a sua paixão. Foi um dia realmente interessante porque, enquanto procurávamos borboletas, parecia que estávamos a jogar Pokémon GO, o que nos motivou imenso na nossa busca. Vimos muitas borboletas lindas, libélulas e orquídeas selvagens. Divertimo-nos imenso com os outros voluntários durante um grande piquenique. Rimos muito e comemos bem. Este dia ficará para sempre na nossa memória; ajudou-nos a perceber o que queremos fazer na vida: tornar-nos naturalistas.
Saturday we had a MONTIS activity in Serra d'El Rei, Peniche. Our task was to use the “iNaturalist” app to record the butterfly species and flora found on the site. We had the opportunity to meet a naturalist expert specializing in Lepidoptera; it was very enriching for us to learn about his passion. This was a really interesting day because, as we searched for butterflies, it felt like we were playing Pokémon GO, which really motivated us in our quest. We saw lots of beautiful butterflies, dragonflies, and wild orchids. We had a great time with the other volunteers over a big picnic. We had a good laugh and ate well. This day will stay with us forever; it helped us figure out what we want to do for a living: become naturalists.
