Monday / Segunda
To start off the new week, we (Axel, Felix and Pascal) walked from our accomodation on the campsite all the way down to Quinta das Lamas, trying to find the mysterious shortcut to reach Vouzela on foot. We eventually found a path that was much faster than the last one we took.
Down in Quinta das Lamas, we met up with Viola and the french group and began debarking invasive acacia trees. As it started to rain, we sought shelter in the old railway tunnel, where we had an enjoyable lunch break with some music and rope-jumping. Pascal enjoying half an entire (!) bread for lunch.
After that, we continued working our way up through the acacias until we finished our day by walking back to Vouzela and being dropped off at the campsite by Guilherme.
On this day, we practiced to count in Basque/French/German with the french guys and we saw fancy mushrooms in the forest.
Para dar início à nova semana, nós (Axel, Felix e Pascal) caminhámos desde o nosso alojamento no parque de campismo até à Quinta das Lamas, tentando encontrar o misterioso atalho para chegar a Vouzela a pé. Acabámos por encontrar um caminho que era muito mais rápido do que o último que tínhamos seguido.
Na Quinta das Lamas, encontrámo-nos com a Viola e o grupo francês e começámos a descascar acácias invasoras. Como começou a chover, procurámos abrigo no antigo túnel ferroviário, onde tivemos uma agradável pausa para almoço com alguma música e saltos à corda. O Pascal a saborear metade de um pão inteiro (!) ao almoço.
Depois disso, continuámos a abrir caminho por entre as acácias até terminarmos o dia, caminhando de volta a Vouzela e sendo deixados no parque de campismo pelo Guilherme.
Neste dia, treinamos a contagem em basco/francês/alemão com os franceses e vimos cogumelos bonitos na floresta.
Tuesday / Terça
After Guilherme drove Axel, Felix and Pascal down to Vouzela from the campsite, we headed to Cabrieira with Viola. There, we went into a different area where Guilherme had already prepared some ways through the bushes to prune the oaks. We made good progress since the oaks were further away from each other and more easy to see because the area was less dense and rocky. After taking a break on some big rocks and a bit of rain, we worked again until it was time to walk back to the meeting point where Inês got us and we discussed plans for the rest of the week.
On this day we enjoyed laying down in the sun on the cobblestones in Vouzela while waiting for Guilherme to drive us, seeing wild flowers and bumblebees on the way.
Depois de o Guilherme ter levado o Axel, o Félix e o Pascal do parque de campismo até Vouzela, fomos para Cabrieira com a Viola. Lá, dirigimo-nos a uma zona diferente, onde o Guilherme já tinha aberto alguns caminhos entre os arbustos para podar os carvalhos. Fizemos bons progressos, uma vez que os carvalhos estavam mais afastados uns dos outros e eram mais fáceis de ver, porque a zona era menos densa e rochosa. Depois de uma pausa em algumas rochas grandes e de um pouco de chuva, voltámos a trabalhar até chegar a hora de regressar ao ponto de encontro, onde a Inês nos foi buscar e conversámos sobre os planos para o resto da semana.
Nesse dia, aproveitámos para nos deitarmos ao sol nos calçada de Vouzela enquanto esperávamos que o Guilherme nos fosse buscar, observando flores silvestres e abelhões pelo caminho.
Wednesday / Quarta
The four of us went pruning in Cabrieira again, making our way through the bushes near the pathway in the middle of the property. As we were eight volunteers in total - the german as well as the french group - we were able to make good progress again. Lunch break was super sunny and we went on mapping the area after that. Felix and Viola were glad to show Pascal and Axel how to map the newly pruned area in Google Earth by setting pins on every corner and then measuring out the area inside of them. Right before we were going to go back to the pickup location, a massive storm came up out of nowhere with lots of rain and hail so we were completely soaked until we reached the cars.
Pruning the last oaks in the pouring rain, all volunteers cramped up in the pick-up to avoid the rain with Pascal in the windscreen.
Nós os quatro fomos novamente podar em Cabrieira, abrindo caminho por entre os arbustos junto ao caminho no meio da propriedade. Como éramos oito voluntários no total - tanto o grupo alemão como o francês -, conseguimos avançar bastante mais uma vez. A pausa para o almoço foi super ensolarada e, depois disso, continuámos a mapear a área. O Felix e a Viola ficaram contentes por mostrar ao Pascal e ao Axel como mapear a área recém-podada no Google Earth, colocando marcadores em cada canto e, em seguida, medindo a área dentro deles. Mesmo antes de voltarmos para o local de recolha, surgiu do nada uma tempestade enorme com muita chuva e granizo, pelo que ficámos completamente encharcados até chegarmos aos carros.
A podar os últimos carvalhos debaixo de chuva torrencial, todos os voluntários amontoaram-se na carrinha para se protegerem da chuva, com o Pascal no para-brisas.
Thursday / Quinta
Guilherme picked Pascal and Axel up already early in the morning to drive to Malveira with Estrellia and Lola from the french group. After 3 to 4 hours on the road we reached the property, where we went down to the southwest part to manually control invasive acacias. Guilherme explained to us how this species of acacia (Acacia longifolia) - other than those in Quinta das Lamas (Acacia melanoxylon) - will not resprout from the roots if cut down. They also already had a biological control in place by bringing specialized wasps out onto the trees that would make the trees produce a spherical shell around their flowers, resulting in the seeds not being carried out and the trees not being able to reproduce. Our work was to cut down the smaller trees and to debark them if they were already too big to be cut effectively. We then carried the trees onto a pile to clear the plantation areas again. In the end of the day, we also went up to the north end of the property to debark a few big acacias there. After that, we drove to Lisbon to go to our accomodation.
Viola and Felix were meanwhile pruning with the rest of the french group in Cabrieira in amazing weather that day!
We had dinner with Lorenzo and got to meet him in Lisbon, having to ration water for the first time because of the heat (after it rained quite a lot for two weeks before).
O Guilherme foi buscar o Pascal e o Axel logo de manhã cedo para irmos de carro até à Malveira com a Estrellia e a Lola, do grupo francês. Após 3 a 4 horas de viagem, chegámos à propriedade, onde nos dirigimos para a zona sudoeste para controlar manualmente as acácias invasoras. O Guilherme explicou-nos que esta espécie de acácia, a acácia de espigas (Acacia longifolia), ao contrário das da Quinta das Lamas, austrália (Acacia melanoxylon), não rebrota das raízes se for cortada. Já tinham também implementado um controlo biológico, introduzindo vespas especializadas nas árvores, que levariam estas a produzir galhas à volta das suas flores, impedindo que as sementes fossem dispersadas e que as árvores se reproduzissem. O nosso trabalho consistiu em cortar as árvores mais pequenas e descascá-las, caso fossem já demasiado grandes para serem cortadas de forma eficaz. Em seguida, transportámos as árvores para uma pilha, a fim de limpar novamente as áreas de plantação. No final do dia, subimos também até à extremidade norte da propriedade para descascar algumas acácias grandes que lá se encontravam. Depois disso, dirigimo-nos a Lisboa para nos instalarmos no nosso alojamento.
Entretanto, a Viola e o Felix estavam a podar com o resto do grupo francês em Cabrieira, num tempo fantástico nesse dia!
Jantámos com o Lorenzo e tivemos a oportunidade de o conhecer em Lisboa, tendo de racionar água pela primeira vez devido ao calor (depois de ter chovido bastante durante as duas semanas anteriores).
Friday / Sexta
After leaving our accomodation in Lisbon, Pascal and Axel went to Malveira again to debark more of the bigger acacias in the northern part of the property. We had lunch on top of the hill where it was really windy but we still had a great view! In the afternoon we piled up lots of young acacia trees that Guilherme cut down with the machine in a dense part of the property. Also, Pascal got an introduction to flying the drone in order to observe the state of the property from above. Sara, the MONTIS volunteer that manages the Malveira property, then drove us to Ericeira and we spent some time at the beach before Guilherme picked us up to go to our next accomodation in Peniche.
Felix and Viola went debarking invasive acacias in Quinta das Lamas that morning, in the afternoon Felix scouted the second area of the property while Viola produced a video for World Environment Day.
When trying to hold everything in place, we ended up spilling a lot during the most windy lunch break on top of the hill..
Depois de sairmos do nosso alojamento em Lisboa, o Pascal e o Axel voltaram à Malveira para descascar mais algumas das acácias maiores na parte norte da propriedade. Almoçámos no topo da colina, onde ventava bastante, mas mesmo assim tivemos uma vista fantástica! À tarde, empilhámos muitas acácias jovens que o Guilherme tinha cortado com a máquina numa zona densa da propriedade. Além disso, o Pascal teve uma introdução ao manuseamento do drone para observar o estado da propriedade a partir de cima. A Sara, a voluntária regular da MONTIS na propriedade da Malveira, levou-nos depois até à Ericeira e passámos algum tempo na praia antes de o Guilherme nos ir buscar para irmos para o nosso próximo alojamento em Peniche.
O Félix e a Viola foram descascar acácias invasoras na Quinta das Lamas nessa manhã; à tarde, o Félix explorou a segunda área da propriedade, enquanto a Viola produziu um vídeo para o Dia Mundial do Ambiente.
Ao tentarmos manter tudo no lugar, acabámos por derramar muita coisa durante a pausa para o almoço, na parte mais ventosa do topo da colina...
Saturday / Sábado
Pascal and Axel drove with Guilherme, Lola and Estrellia to a MONTIS activity near Peniche. The format of the activity was to do a "BioBlitz" about the local abundance of butterflies, where the participants were supposed to map flowers and butterflies around the property of Serra d'El Rei with the app iNaturalist. During the activity, the biologist and butterfly specialist Luis Cardoso was guiding the group, giving information and context throughout the walk around the property. We saw a few species of diurnal butterflies (unfortunately the conditions were not perfect due to strong winds) and many different flowers. After the walk, we built up a picknick for the group and had conversations about the flora and fauna we saw earlier. Then we did another short walk to take a look at another corner of the property with lots of roadside flowers and afterwards drove back towards Vouzela.
On this day we saw lots of colourful flowers at Serra d'el Rei, had a picknick for lunch and tried some very good soft portuguese cheese.
O Pascal e o Axel foram de carro com o Guilherme, a Lola e a Estrellia para uma atividade da MONTIS perto de Peniche. A atividade consistiu num BioBlitz de borboletas, em que os participantes mapearam flores e borboletas na propriedade da Serra d'El Rei através da aplicação iNaturalist. Durante a atividade, o biólogo e especialista em borboletas Luís Cardoso guiou o grupo, fornecendo informações e contexto ao longo do passeio pela propriedade. Vimos algumas espécies de borboletas diurnas (infelizmente as condições não eram perfeitas devido aos ventos fortes) e muitas flores diferentes. Após o passeio, preparámos um piquenique para o grupo e conversámos sobre a flora e a fauna que tínhamos visto anteriormente. Depois, fizemos outra curta caminhada para dar uma vista de olhos a outro recanto da propriedade, repleto de flores à beira da estrada, e, posteriormente, regressámos de carro a Vouzela.
Neste dia, vimos muitas flores coloridas na Serra d'El Rei, fizemos um piquenique ao almoço e provámos um excelente queijo macio português.
