The MONTIS volunteers tell us how their volunteering week went, from March 29 to April 4. Read their testimony below!
Domingo / Sunday
O domingo foi uma continuação da nossa atividade durante o fim de semana. No nosso último dia na Ericeira, fomos até a Serra d’El Rei. Nesse dia, juntaram-se a nós cerca de 20 voluntários para ajudar nas plantações. Com tanta gente, conseguimos plantar 205 plantas ainda antes do almoço. Assim, terminámos o trabalho e desfrutámos juntos de um grande piquenique, no meio da serra. E, apesar de o sol estar a brilhar e não haver nuvens à vista, a brisa moderadamente forte manteve a temperatura agradável. Foi muito bom conhecer os outros voluntários. Depois do almoço, despedimo-nos deles, enchemos o carro com todas as nossas coisas e regressámos a Carvalhais. Lá, passámos a nossa última noite com o Noah, a Emilie e o Huberson.
Continuing our weekend activity, on our last day in Ericeira, we went to Serra d’El Rei. Around 20 more volunteers joined to help us that day with planting trees. With that many people we planted 205 trees even before lunch. So, we finished up and together enjoyed a big picnic, in the middle of the mountain. And even though the sun was out, with no clouds in sight, the mildly-strong breeze kept us at good temperature. It was fun to get to know the other volunteers. After lunch we parted our ways with the volunteers, filled the car with all our stuff and made our way back to Carvalhais. There we spend our last evening with Noah, Emilie and Huberson.
Segunda-feira e Terça-feira / Monday and Tuesday
Na manhã de segunda-feira, demos os últimos abraços e despedidas aos nossos amigos franceses e desejámos-lhes uma boa viagem de regresso a casa. O resto da tarde e a terça-feira foram passados a limpar a casa e a recuperar da longa e intensa semana de trabalho.
On Monday morning we gave our French friends our final hugs and goodbyes and wished them safe travels on their long trip back home. The rest of the evening and Tuesday we spent cleaning up the household and recovering from the long last week of hard work.

Quarta-feira / Wednesday
Depois de descansarmos e fazermos as malas, fomos para o nosso último dia de trabalho no terreno nas montanhas do Baldio. Motivados e cheios de energia, nós os três conseguimos plantar 80 árvores em cerca de 2 horas, na segunda área onde os trabalhadores florestais conseguiram abrir mais espaço. Depois almoçámos e, de seguida, arrumámos os nossos últimos pertences para iniciar a viagem até ao próximo alojamento, em Couto. Com a técnica Inês, ficámos a conhecer a casa e, pouco depois, começámos a desfazer as malas e a tornar o novo espaço mais acolhedor.
After resting up and packing our bags, we went on our final day on the field in Baldio mountains. Motivated and full of energy, the now three of us managed to plant 80 trees within the span of 2 hours in the second area where the forest workers managed to open up more space. Afterwards we had a quick lunch and then packed our last belongings to begin our journey to the next accommodation in Couto. With technician Inês we became familiar with the house and soon after started unpacking and making our new living more cozy.
Quinta-feira / Thursday
A nossa primeira manhã na nova casa começou com muito sol e com o pequeno-almoço ao ar livre, acompanhados por simpáticos cães da vizinhança. Já prontos para sair, esperámos que a Inês viesse buscar-nos de carro para nos levar até à nossa nova área principal de trabalho, na serra. Ela mostrou-nos outro caminho lindíssimo que nos pode levar até ao local de trabalho e explicou como este se liga a outra zona onde já tínhamos plantado árvores antes. À tarde, mesmo com a onda de calor que se fazia sentir, podamos um total de 16 carvalhos, até que a Inês nos veio buscar novamente.
Our first morning in our new home started with lots of sunshine and eating breakfast outside alongside friendly neighbourhood dogs. Everyone ready to go, we waited for Inês to come and pick us up with a car and drive us to our new main working area up the mountain. She showed us another gorgeous pathway that can lead us to our workplace and how it connects to another area where we have planted trees before. Afterwards we pruned in the afternoon heatwave in total 16 oaks until Inês came to pick us up again.
Sexta-feira / Friday
Sexta-feira continuámos a trabalhar com o bom tempo. Desta vez, em vez de por um técnico, fomos recebidos por um simpático taxista local, que nos levou até perto da propriedade. Começámos o dia mais cedo do que no dia anterior, para evitar trabalhar durante as horas de maior calor. Em vez disso, fizemos a pausa para almoço nessa altura e voltámos ao trabalho depois de descansar, até sermos novamente recolhidos pelo taxista. Num dia bastante produtivo, podamos 24 carvalhos. Ficámos felizes e satisfeitos por dar as boas-vindas ao nosso primeiro fim de semana em Couto.
Friday we continued working in the beautiful weather. This time instead of a technician we were greeted by a kind local taxi driver to pick us up and leave us near the property. This time we started our day more earlier than yesterday so we wouldn’t have to work at the peak of the day when the heat is the most intense. Instead we had our lunch break at that time and then worked again after resting until we got picked up by the taxi driver again. With an efficient day gone by we pruned together 24 oaks this time. We were happy and satisfied to welcome our first weekend in Couto.
