Tuesday / Terça
On this day we were visited by Caudalie, and they accompanied us in the property in Cabrieira. First, Felix gave them an interview and after that we gave them an introduction to the work we do in the field, showing them around and explaining how to prune the oak trees. They were really interested and friendly! Then, we collected some drone shots from the property, both for Caudalie and ourselves, which was really exciting. Lastly, we continued pruning until the end of our work day :)
The entire group went to a café after work and tried the pastry of Vouzela, many of us for the first time. It was really sweet!
Neste dia recebemos a visita da Caudalie, que nos acompanhou na propriedade em Cabrieira. Primeiro, o Félix concedeu-lhes uma entrevista e, depois disso, fizemos-lhes uma apresentação do trabalho que realizamos no terreno, mostrando-lhes as instalações e explicando como podar os carvalhos. Mostraram-se muito interessados e simpáticos! Depois, captámos algumas imagens com o drone da propriedade, tanto para a Caudalie como para nós próprios, o que foi realmente emocionante. Por fim, continuámos a podar até ao final do nosso dia de trabalho :)
Todo o grupo foi a um café depois do trabalho e provou o pastel de Vouzela, muitos de nós pela primeira vez. Estava mesmo doce!
Wednesday / Quarta
In the morning, we made our way from Vouzela to Pampilhosa da Serra, again accompanied by Angelique from Caudalie, to show her a different property from MONTIS, the Covões property near Unhais river. The ride there was already really beautiful and after a quick stop at a nice lake nearby, we explored the biodiversity of this property and learned many new things about the nature of Portugal. As there was so much to see in this property, we spent a lot of time taking photos of and identifying plants and animals both in this and another property nearby, which was really interesting and a lot of fun! After that, Angelique had to leave us, so only us volunteers went to a third area with Guilherme, where he showed us around again and showed us a special wasp that you could find in the property. That concluded our work day and we made our way back to our new accomodation in Unhais-o-Velho.
On this day we also saw Lorenzo catching an iberian frog and identifying a fish by a fish bone that he found in otter poop near Unhais river and showed us.
De manhã, partimos de Vouzela rumo a Pampilhosa da Serra, mais uma vez acompanhados pela Angelique da Caudalie, para lhe mostrar uma propriedade diferente da MONTIS: a propriedade de Covões, junto ao rio Unhais. O trajeto até lá já foi realmente lindo e, após uma breve paragem num belo lago nas proximidades, explorámos a biodiversidade desta propriedade e aprendemos muitas coisas novas sobre a natureza de Portugal. Como havia tanto para ver nesta propriedade, passámos muito tempo a tirar fotos e a identificar plantas e animais, tanto nesta como noutra propriedade nas proximidades, o que foi realmente interessante e muito divertido! Depois disso, a Angelique teve de se despedir de nós, pelo que apenas nós, voluntários, fomos para uma terceira área com o Guilherme, onde ele nos mostrou novamente os arredores e nos mostrou uma vespa especial que se podia encontrar na propriedade. Isso concluiu o nosso dia de trabalho e regressámos ao nosso novo alojamento em Unhais-o-Velho.
Nesse dia, também vimos o Lorenzo a apanhar uma rã ibérica e a identificar um peixe através de uma espinha que encontrou em dejetos de lontra e que nos mostrou.
Thursday / Quinta
On Thursday we started to prune in the Covões property, mainly the holm oak and the strawberry tree, unfortunately without real strawberries :(. We spent our lunch break at the lake again (which was nice since it was really hot on that day) and then went down to the Unhais river, where Guilherme showed us many more interesting species, such as the European Holly and the Portuguese Laural (especially bigger ones of these species are hard to find). While the way there wasn‘t easy, it was really rewarding to see and we also found some interesting caterpillars and spiders. We spent the rest of the day trying to clear paths in the dense vegetation of the forest near the river, mainly cutting brambles and collecting dead wood.
Na quinta começámos a podar na propriedade dos Covões, principalmente a azinheira e o medronheiro, infelizmente sem morangos a sério :( (porque o nome em Inglês é "árvore dos morangos", se traduzido literalmente). Passámos a pausa para o almoço novamente junto ao lago (o que foi agradável, uma vez que estava muito calor nesse dia) e depois descemos até ao rio Unhais, onde o Guilherme nos mostrou muitas outras espécies interessantes, tais como o azevinho e o azereiro (especialmente os exemplares maiores destas espécies, que são difíceis de encontrar). Embora o caminho até lá não fosse fácil, foi realmente gratificante ver tudo isto e também encontrámos algumas lagartas e aranhas interessantes. Passámos o resto do dia a tentar abrir caminhos na vegetação densa da floresta perto do rio, principalmente a cortar silvas e a recolher madeira morta.
